The Gypsy Kitchen
SO, let me get this straight - you bring the kitchen gear, I bring the food, right?
So, if I were organising an 'art' camp for say, 10 peeps, this is one less thing I need to bring for my troops, because I can feed them at the gypsy kitchen?

Burning Man live webcam
A live webcam has been set up on the Playa this year.
It's kind of painful watching it, wishing I was there again, but it's also very awesome. And the way the lights shine at night is awe inspiring.

Greetings from Black Rock City, where the playa is flat, the weather is hot, and the food is dusty. Welcome to the annual Transportation Edition of the JRS, wherein we fill you in on all the info about getting TO, AROUND, and THE HELL OUT OF Black Rock City.
We want you to get HERE safely, so you can play with us! We want you to get AROUND the playa safely so you don't kill anybody, or get yourself in any more trouble than you're already gonna (see: open container laws). And we want you to get HOME safely so you can play with us next year. And because, generally speaking, we like you.
So we'll highlight this one point right up front. DRIVE SAFELY, PEOPLE. Don't pass people recklessly and unnecessarily on 447 ... don't speed ... don't DUI ... don't be an idiot. Seriously. It's not worth it.
Second thing we'll highlight is that we're doing this cool new Pulsing system during Exodus that will get you out of BRC as fast as usual (as fast as we can push that many people through a 2-lane highway), but now with more sanity and less environmental impact. Read on and share the good info with your friends.
Oh and in case you haven't seen it yet, John Curley continues his wonderful chronicles of building BRC in the Burning Blog. Check it out:

BURNING MAN RIDESHARE BOARD
Save yourself some money, and save your planet some carbon emissions by ridesharing. Here, you can use our rideshare board ... g'head, we don't mind:
http://rideshare.burningman.com
Oh, and some quick reminders when car sharing:
1. Pitching in gas money is cool. Way cool. 2. Tickets are not being sold at the gate this year. Yes, really. Make sure everybody in the car has their ticket, or none will be allowed in the gate. Yes, really. 3. When you post to the board, be honest about who you are, what you're bringing, how much (and whether) you can share driving responsibilities, your temperment, expectations, and any special needs. When it comes to ridesharing, surprises suck. 4. Make sure you're comfortable with the person with whom you're driving. 5. Have fun ... make a friend.

I-80 AND BAY BRIDGE ROAD CLOSURES, DETOURS, DELAYS, ETC.
In April 2009, the California Department of Transportation launched a major construction effort on Interstate 80, which includes eight separate projects that will provide various road improvements over a nearly 80-mile stretch of the highway from Colfax, California to the Nevada State line. Project construction, which has been on hiatus since last November, has resumed and will continue through November 2010. Make sure you anticipate any delays or detours that might affect you and impact your travel plans. For full information, visit any or all of these sites:

DRIVING THE SPEED LIMIT IS THE NEW RADICAL SELF-EXPRESSION
During Burning Man, there are plenty of law enforcement officers patrolling the routes to the Black Rock Desert, just WAITING for you to speed, so they can write you a nice fat citation. Seriously. Don't speed. Like even 5 MPH over, and they'll nail your ass. It's just not worth it. And just the right thing to do, caring for the safety of the people, children and pets living in the small towns along the way.

SOME HELPFUL ADVICE FROM THE NEVADA HIGHWAY PATROL
Every year the NHP helps hundreds of burners who get stranded or otherwise experience problems on the road to and from the event. At a recent meeting they let us know some super helpful tips to avoid the most common problems that Burners experience while on the road:
Balding... ...The NHP reports that bald tires are a significant factor in accidents and break downs so be sure to check your tires before you leave for the event and replace those old tires if you need to.
Too tired to drive... ...The NHP reports that of the accidents in September '07 that they relate to Burning Man traffic, the number one reported cause of these accidents was fatigue. Be sure to be well rested and sober (duh), with a copilot to help to keep you company while you drive. Behind the wheel is no place for a playa hangover.
Driving on empty.. Coming to Black Rock City from the West on Highway 80? Get fuel in Fernley as pumps in Wadsworth are not open all night. Coming from the Pacific Northwest? Gas up in Cedarville. For those coming from the SF Bay Area and all points south, fill up in Reno/Sparks. Sure there are other gas stations between these recommended stops and Gerlach, but do you really want to risk that the station is closed, out of fuel, or backed up with traffic for miles? And parking on the shoulder creates traffic hazards. Wadsworth, Empire and Gerlach CANNOT handle the kind of traffic created by fueling lines in 2009. And it will only be worse on the way OUT of Burning Man. Gas up at the recommended filling cities beforehand. And this goes for fuel for RV generators as well. One more thing--figure out what kind of fuel your generator uses BEFOREHAND. Most generators do NOT run on gasoline.
No camping ... Camping is prohibited in Gerlach. Please respected the local citizens.
Traveling into Wadsworth after Burning Man... The 2010 Reno-Sparks-Wadsworth Recycling Project has a new partner this year, Trash Pros, which is located a mile north of Wadsworth on 447, just before you enter the town. Expect a reduced speed limit, traffic-safety workers and signs, and slowing of traffic here during Exodus.
Going for broke... ...If your vehicle breaks down please carefully pull off the road to allow traffic to continue past you safely. NHP may push your vehicle off the road if needed but if you can safely coast or push your vehicle onto a gravel shoulder, please do so.
Soft shoulders... ...The shoulders of State Route 447 and the other rural highways have *very* soft shoulders and the chance of getting stuck is much higher than you expect, especially in the soft sands around Pyramid lake. Only pull over if you absolutely have to and if at all possible only on fully developed gravel shoulders. It's also easy to roll a vehicle if you hit these soft shoulders at high speeds
Watch your load... ...Be sure your any loads on your roof rack or trailers are tied down properly. This especially applies at the end of the event on the way home when you may be tired and less careful about how you load and tie down. Taking a couple of extra minutes to tie down your load is a lot easier than scurrying about on the highway trying to pick up your gear while playing real life frogger with the oncoming traffic.
Hurry up and wait... ...the wait for tow trucks can be very long (think hours and hours). Sitting on the side of the road is a major bummer so please be careful.

ENJOY "AMERICA'S SOLAR HIGHWAY", COURTESY OF BLACK ROCK SOLAR
Over the last three years, Black Rock Solar (www.blackrocksolar.org) has been busy spreading free solar power arrays throughout northern Nevada. In fact, they've been so good at it that Nevada Governor Jim Gibbons just declared HWY 447 "America's Solar Highway," with the following proclamation:
"Proclamation:
Whereas; Nevada is a state rich in natural, renewable resources, such as solar, wind and geothermal energy; and
Whereas; Building a strong economy on renewable energy will benefit the residents of Nevada for generations to come, and
Whereas; Green collar jobs can provide a living wage for thousands of Nevada workers, and can never be exported or outsourced; and
Whereas; Nevada's Solar Generations rebate program provides millions of dollars for Nevada homeowners, businesses, non-profits, schools and public buildings to install solar energy; and
Whereas; In the last three years, a total of ten solar arrays have been built under the Solar Generations program along the 75 mile length of State Highway 447 between Fernley and Gerlach; and
Whereas; Those solar arrays total 451 kilowatts for an average of six kilowatts of energy produced per mile; and
Whereas; This is believed to be the largest amount of distributed solar power per mile of any highway in the country; and
Whereas: Travelers from across the state and around the world driving along Highway 447 to the Black Rock Desert in August will see these arrays and recognize the opportunities they represent for our state's future;
Now, therefore, I, Jim Gibbons, Governor of the State of Nevada, do hereby proclaim HIghway 447 to be 'America's Solar Highway.'"

This is a pretty cool way for everybody to connect with each other on their way to Burning Man!
How to get going: 1. Download waze by visiting www.waze.com/download - http://m.waze.com/ from your phone – or searching for ‘waze’ in the Appstores (All smartphones) 2. Once you’ve registered, join the BRC group (from iPhone and iPad). To do this, click on ‘groups’ in the main menu, click on the magnifying glass icon and search for BRC, and join us! 3. You’ll be able to track other group members with the BRC logo next to their avatar, all across the country, as we advance towards the Playa. Along the way you’ll be able to send chit chats and road reports to other BRC driving group members and organize stops along the way.

VISIT THE SAFE HAVEN RESCUE ZOO IN IMLAY, NV
Traveling from the East to Burning Man on Hwy 80? Consider Visiting the Safe Haven Rescue Zoo in Imlay, NV
Safe Haven Rescue Zoo, in Nevada’s scenic Buena Vista Valley, shares the Burning Man commitment to nature and the environment. The sanctuary rescues, rehabilitates, and releases orphaned and injured wildlife, and provides expert, loving care for non-releasable animals. Many of the permanent residents were rescued from the exotic pet trade. Unprepared for survival in the wild, they live with dignity at Safe Haven. The animals enjoy a variety of environmental enrichment experiences that keep their minds and instincts sharp.
Visitors are able to observe Safe Haven’s wildlife in secure habitats that preserve the natural environment as much as possible. The sanctuary’s newest residents are a pair of Siberian tigers that were previously confined in a residential neighborhood in Washington State. These former “pets” were in urgent need of rescue, and Safe Haven stepped in to offer them a new life. The permanent resident wildlife also includes cougars, bobcats, and foxes. Safe Haven also provides off-site educational presentations to area schools and youth groups regarding caring for wildlife and their natural history.
Safe Haven’s location offers breathtaking views of Star Peak in the Humboldt Range. The surrounding area is rich with opportunities for back-country hiking and biking. There’s no better place to sample the treasures of Western folklife, historic inns, and the finest authentic Basque cuisine in the country!
Safe Haven is a solar-powered “green” facility. To arrange a tour, please contact Safe Haven’s director, Ms. Lynda Sugasa, by phone (775-538-7093) or e-mail (safehavenwildlife1@yahoo.com).

WHAT TO EXPECT AT THE GATE
The Gate Crew works VERY hard in sometimes NIGHTMARISH conditions throughout the ENTIRE event, as they meticulously process EVERY SINGLE PARTICIPANT who comes into Black Rock City. The Gate has its own unique culture: part theater, a lot of pride, and deep-seated professional integrity ... and beneath every tough exterior beats the soft heart of a very good person. Here are some tips on what to expect at the Gate when arriving at Black Rock City and how to make the process go as smoothly as possible for you:
#1. DON'T SHOW UP EARLY Don't be the dinner guest who arrives before the party starts.
If you do not have a special early arrivals pass, DO NOT arrive at the Gate until the event starts. Showing up early may cause you to get into the event later than if you show up on time (really, we mean it). If you arrive before the Gate opens you will not be allowed into the event and you will not be allowed to wait at the Gate. Under no circumstances should you wait on the side of the road anywhere along highway 447 or 34, or in Gerlach. This is a serious safety hazard and places our event at risk.
#2. BE PREPARED. Don't be the person who shows up for the test without doing the homework.
When you roll up to the playa, have your ticket and any applicable paperwork (e.g., copy of mutant vehicle registration) in your hand. Not in your friends' hands, not in your trunk, not in your friend named Hans' trunk. Be prepared to show your ticket to the Gate volunteer as soon as you hit the gravel (heck, get it ready in Gerlach!).
Your car will be searched at the Gate. Keep this in mind when packing and the search will be easier for everyone, which means you get through faster. If you have a large vehicle or a lot of stuff, we appreciate your help during the search. Read the Survival Guide and know what items are not allowed into BRC!
#3. KNOW WHERE YOU NEED TO GO Don't be like a tourist driving the wrong way down a one way road.
Buying a ticket or picking up a Will Call ticket?: stay in the FAR RIGHT LANE on Gate Road and look for the entrance to the Will Call Lot. Go to Will Call/Box Office, get your tickets and then get in line. Everyone in your vehicle must have a ticket in hand when you reach the Gate or your entire car will be turned around.
#4. SET REALISTIC EXPECTATIONS Don't be like you were in so many of your failed relationships.
Thousands of people arrive in the first 18 hours of opening (Sunday night through Monday). If you arrive during these hours, expect a long wait at the Gate and be patient. If you want a smoother and faster entry, arrive after the initial rush. If your car will overheat from idling for hours, come after the rush. This is also true for Exodus - avoid leaving during the peak afternoon times on Sunday and Monday if you want your best chance at a shorter line.
#5. BE KIND, EVERYTHING WILL BE OKAY Don't be one of those people who loses their cool.
The Gate folks are VOLUNTEERS. They donate their time to help you get in and out of Black Rock City. Treat them like you would anyone else in our community. Please be patient, play nice and wait your turn. Cutting in line, running through fences, or being aggressive not only makes you uber lame, it will guarantee that you get into the event a LOT later than you planned.
See you in the dust!

OOOH OOOH OOOH! I WANT TO DRIVE ON THE PLAYA!
A public service announcement about driving on the playa from the Intercept Crew of the Black Rock Rangers: As you may know, the Special Recreation Permit that allows Burning Man to take place contains a number of stipulations specifically related to motor vehicle use. Addressing vehicle safety concerns within Black Rock City is the responsibility of the Black Rock Rangers. The Rangers' Intercept Program was created in 2004 to address concerns that internal vehicle safety issues would otherwise be dealt with by law enforcement agencies. This is the most important point in understanding the rationale behind Intercept--If we don't address these issues ourselves, someone else will. As a Citizen of Black Rock City, what do I need to know about driving on the playa? If you are not authorized to drive on the playa, DON'T DRIVE during Burning Man. The ONLY people who ARE authorized to drive on the playa are registered mutant vehicles with visible licensure from the Department of Mutant Vehicles, artists placing art on the Playa with permits from the Artery, registered disabled persons displaying licensure and a placard, and limited staff vehicles. ALWAYS operate your APPROVED vehicle in a safe manner. Remember that Black Rock City is primarily a BIKE AND PEDESTRIAN CITY. Take that in to account when operating a mutant vehicle. Our established community standard is for vehicles to operate at 5 MPH or less. The unique characteristics of many mutated vehicles require drivers to exercise particular care when faced with limited peripheral vision and/or loading and unloading passengers. Please take this into consideration. All of the laws and restrictions that apply to driving in the default world also apply on the playa. Additionally, playa conditions require that all vehicles STOP during white-out conditions, that you not drive on wet roads, and that you operate at speeds of even less than 5MPH if your vehicle is creating a dust plume in its wake. What do Intercept Rangers do while interacting with vehicles operating on the playa?
First and foremost, we are Black Rock Rangers, volunteering our time to assist the community. We are available as a resource for vehicle safety, ensuring that citizens, drivers and mutant vehicles are operating in a responsible manner when it comes to driving/riding on the playa in our primarily pedestrian city. We are prone to stopping people to just chat about their kick-ass vehicles ... please chat with us if you can.
If you are placing art on the playa and your driving permit is a temporary slip of paper that we can't see from afar, please be patient with us if we stop you more than once, it's what we do. We track interactions based on the VEHICLE, not just the driver. One person on your crew driving unsafely can ruin things for everyone. Remember, in Black Rock City, driving is a privilege. More information about driving protocols can be found here:
http://tinyurl.com/83nhn

PLEASE REFRAIN FROM DRIVING LARGE MUTANT VEHICLES UP TO THE MAN
Do you know how many rules there are in Black Rock City? Not many. Do you know why? Because a) we don't like them, and b) we rely on the collective civic-minded behavior of our citizens to do the right thing so we don't have to make them. Here's an area where we do NOT want to make a rule, and so we're asking participants to take it upon themselves to self-police.
Having a large number of large vehicles inside the L3K circle around the Man creates a significant safety hazard, and makes it hard to enjoy a peaceful respite at the Man base, or to enjoy the art project that's taking place beneath the Man this year. Often, large vehicles move bikes to make way for themselves, resulting in unnecessarily "lost" bikes. So we ask:
Large vehicles, especially those with massive sound and blowing fire ... please refrain from entering the L3K circle.
Your cooperation is VERY much appreciated.

WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH OPEN CONTAINER ON MUTANT VEHICLES?
Keith, a 5-year art car owner/operator, wrote us a helpful email about operating a mutant vehicle on playa, based on his direct experience (and not all in a good way):
"WHAT IS OPEN CONTAINER ON AN ART CAR? If the art car has NO separated cabin from the rest of the vehicle (e.g. a floating bed) then technically there can be no visible open container on the vehicle. This gets very tricky with certain vehicles especially if the driver's SEPARATION is somewhat subjective and if the driver relies on someone else to allow people aboard. Also throw in the factor of a guest pulling out their drink (or other substance) of choice out of view of driver and/or first mate, and then you have a ticket waiting to happen.
And guess what? The driver can get written up separate, cumulative fines for every different substance that is found on the vehicle. Each person possessing the substances also gets written up for what is individually found.
And while if you cooperate, you just usually get a ticket, it can end your burn, especially if the substance found is cocaine based, because of special Federal laws procedures pertaining to that. Also if they cannot identify the substance and don't trust your description, or you cannot or will not provide ID, then you are in for a ride to Reno.
WHAT IS LEGITIMATE PROBABLE CAUSE? That is any obvious alcoholic beverage with a label, or any obvious drug use, but also the SMELL of any obvious drug use. That will get you boarded and searched. But it could and has also been stretched to when someone is drinking out of a plastic/glass type receptacle that is typical of a bar environment (martini glass) and is displaying inebriation.
And then depending on the agency, they usually search the rest of the vehicle (of call in the agency that can) and lean on people to 'voluntarily' give up that they have other substances, which 5 times out of ten works. Small art cars are also more vulnerable to the owner/op being penalized for their guests, while large art cars with separated cabins often get through with less fines unless they are repeat offenders.
Many many busts the last few years are related to these specific issues above. Obviously it doesn't always go down the same way but there are certain generally predictable proceedures that law enforcement uses."

A HUMBLE REQUEST FROM DRIVERS OF LEGITIMATELY NON-MUTATED VEHICLES
OK, we love that people are enthusiastic about the idea of a high-quality mutated vehicle. But at the same time, it's good to remember that there are other drivers on playa who are legitimately driving non-mutated vehicles (cars, golf carts, and scooters); it's HIGHLY likely that they are either Burning Man staffers or disabled persons.
It's not uncommon for these folks to get berated by passers-by with snide taunts like "Hey, nice art car!" or "Mutate your vehicle, man!" It's happened to this Rabbit on more than one occasion, in fact, while doing Burning Man-related business. And it kinda sucks, to be honest.
So unless you know the circumstances of their license, please don't be rude to these drivers. Much appreciated.

HAPPINESS IS A SPARE CAR KEY
Every year, Burners manage to lock their keys in their car, or lose their keys altogether. Not only is this a drag, it's an expensive drag. Having a locksmith re-core your lock, open a door, or cut a key can be expensive and time consuming.
So a wee bit o' preparation will save you plenty of strife, strain and struggle, (whether that be scraping up your car with a coat hanger, waiting for the locksmith, replacing a broken window or replacing an ignition core). Simply make an extra key (if you're renting a car, ask for one from the rental company, or go make your own copy), then store it securely *outside* of your car ... just in case it happens to you. Self reliance at its highest power. Problem solved! Potential lost dollars and sanity saved. See, it really is the key to happiness (ha, get it?)!

GO-PED STYLE VEHICLES AND BLACK ROCK CITY
You may be thinking about bringing a go-ped type vehicle to get around at Burning Man... you may want to think more on that. There are lot of thoughts and strong feelings on this topic, so we thought we would address the issue.
Black Rock City is built primarily for pedestrians and bicycles. It is densely crowed and motorized vehicles can cause safety hazards and difficulties for those traversing our terrain. By necessity, we limit the number of motorized vehicles moving around. This is for reasons of safety as well as to encourage interaction and immediacy within our civic-minded community.
We have, thus far, allowed small, stand-up (with no seat attached, nor designed for a seat), two-wheeled, low-powered, single passenger, go-ped type "scooters" under the driving rules of Black Rock City, even though they are motorized and unlicensed by DMV. If your "scooter" doesn't meet every one of these criteria, please leave it at home!
GoPeds are generally frowned upon by the organization as well as the masses. They are one of the least creative or aesthetically pleasing methods of transportation available at Burning Man. They have historically been allowed mostly because their small size and mass generally doesn't pose a physical hazard much beyond that of a bicycle. However, they do create a number of other issues.
The first is speed. Because these are actually motorized vehicles, they need to obey the 5MPH speed limit and all other driving rules that apply to motorized vehicles. Be mindful of your speed and make sure you're not creating a hazard to others or being a nuisance to the population as a whole. In many cases, playa conditions are such that it is hard to remain upright on go-peds at low speeds--that doesn't mean you can go faster than 5MPH--it means you need to walk beside your mechanical steed. You should also be aware that no vehicle can operate at our event after dark without a headlight and taillight.
The second big issue is noise. Many of these little petroleum powered laziness machines are basically two-stroke, non-muffled, "weed-eaters with wheels". They are loud and annoying to many that they buzz by. For this reason, the electric, battery-powered versions are usually preferred to the gas, but if you do have a gas version, please be sure to get one with a muffler or add a muffler to the one you have. Also, please do your best to decorate your ride or mutate it to the point that you are actually adding to the quality of visual experience out there instead of detracting from it.
In a tightly packed community of tens of thousands of people, we all need to be individually responsible in how we behave, as it does impact the whole, especially when hundreds or thousands are engaging in behavior that can negatively affect the whole community.
As far as electric bikes go, those are allowed. As per NRS 482.0287 “Electric bicycle” means a device upon which a person may ride, having two or three wheels, or every such device generally recognized as a bicycle that has fully operable pedals and is propelled by a small electric engine which produces not more than 1 gross brake horsepower and which produces not more than 750 watts final output, and: 1. Is designed to travel on not more than three wheels in contact with the ground but is not a tractor; and 2. Powered solely by such a small electric engine, is capable of a maximum speed of not more than 20 miles per hour on a flat surface while carrying an operator who weighs 170 pounds. The term does not include a moped.
Please note:
The Gate crew will be helping to identify any vehicle differing from the description above, or that appears to be more dangerous than the kind listed above. If you have such a vehicle, you must either be take it off site or leave it at the gate outside Black Rock City until after the event. Vehicles left outside the gate are left at their owner's risk, so you may just want to leave it at home. Once inside the city, the Rangers keep a close eye on the movement of vehicles, and will work to protect all of us by removing any that violate either the written, implied, or common sense rules of operation.
Please take these thoughts into consideration when planning your trip to Black Rock City. We hope your freedom to use motorized personal transport will be balanced with consideration for your fellow citizens and your sense of civic responsibility. We're confident that you can be more creative than just "buying a scooter" anyway.

THE BRC <--> GERLACH / EMPIRE SHUTTLE BUS
Burning Man runs a shuttle bus that takes passengers from Black Rock City to Gerlach and Empire and back. It costs $10 for the trip, and it departs from Wheel Road and 6:00 (on the outer edge of the Center Camp circle). Full details, schedule, etc. can be found here:
http://tinyurl.com/yrhyvt
Oh, and you have to be sober and fully clothed to ride the bus. C'mon ... just this once, it's not that hard.

EXODUS: DON'T LET THE DOOR HIT YOUR ASS ON YOUR WAY OUT
As important as figuring how you are getting to Burning Man is how you are planning to leave, and when. Exodus gets more interesting every year as the population of Black Rock City grows. It's important that you know what to expect and plan accordingly. To state it simply, the highway that leads away from BRC is at capacity for most of the time that Exodus is running.
Short of building a bigger highway between BRC and Reno, there is not much we can do to get more cars off the playa any faster. What we can do though is make the process as run as smoothly and efficiently as Possible, but for that we need your cooperation and participation.
Plan on a 3 - 4 hour wait, on average, in line from BRC to the paved highway, Highway 34. Plan for another 3 hours or more from the start of the highway to Reno. Either of these times could increase to as high as 6 hours or more if there are accidents or other traffic issues, including too many people trying to leave BRC all at once.
If you are making flight reservations or need to get somewhere at a certain time, take this into account. You should not plan on leaving the city and catching a flight the same day! Give yourself some safety margin. Also be aware that if you leave in the evening, you may be driving until early in the morning. Be prepared. Be safe.
So you are asking, "What can we do? When is it best to leave?" Any night from 2am to dawn, Monday night after dark, or yes, Saturday before the Man burns traditionally have less congestion and are the best times to leave. However this does not mean that there will not be any line, you should plan on the same wait times mentioned above.
As far as what you can do, start listening to BMIR radio when you are getting ready to leave, and hang around your packed vehicles in camp. When you hear a positive status report, jump in line. If you hear things are backed up, stay in camp and enjoy a little more of our fair city ... does your camp need another MOOP sweep? Once in line follow the signals from the Exodus personnel on gate road and Flaggers on the highway.
Be sure to read your Survival Guide or check the Burning Man web site for more detailed information on Exodus: http://tinyurl.com/55vwr2
Above all, keep that playa vibe with you! No sense getting road rage, cutting in front of your fellow community members, or trying to dangerously pass cars on the highway in order to save a few minutes. Take your time, have fun, and remember, Leave no Trace and the community spirit do not stop once you leave Black Rock City.
Want to do more? We need your help! This year Exodus will need more people than ever. We run shifts from Saturday night all the way through Monday, as well as set up earlier in the week and tear down after our operations end. To volunteer for Exodus fill out the questionnaire at:

Happy Leaving.

EXODUS PULSING PLAN FOR PEAK DEPARTURE HOURS
We are instituting a new, more efficient, more environmentally-friendly, fossil-fuel saving way of doing Exodus during peak hours (Sunday and Monday). Here's how Pulsing works ... please share this with everybody you know!! You will get out IN EXACTLY THE SAME AMOUNT OF TIME YOU WOULD OTHERWISE, BUT MORE EFFICIENTLY!! YOU: So, what is this "Pulsing" thing? By now, you probably have heard that we are going to something really interesting, really innovative, and maybe even really wonderful to the Exodus. That thing is called the Traffic Pulsing System (TPS), or "Pulsing." This note hopes to describe what pulsing will be like for you. YOU: Why are we going to be pulsing? We all know that if you leave Black Rock City on Sunday or on Monday, you are going to be creeping along the 8 lanes of gate road at ONE (1) MPH (yes, we did the math!) for three hours. For some of us, that is the longest three hours of our life. Painfully long. In that three hours, we forget we are citizens of Black Rock City…we revert to being citizens of *insert name of your default metropolis here*, and we begin to drive and act accordingly. We believe this creeping...this slow, painful, non-interactive drive, is at the root of some of the negativity that is experienced during the Exodus. YOU: But it's necessary to creep for three hours, right? This is the magic of pulsing. It is a little difficult to explain without a graphic, but bear with me. Let's say gate road is 3 miles long, and it is all full of cars. On the old exodus system, that three mile column of cars all moves forward, constantly and slowly, until each individual car reaches the highway. Now imagine if we broke that 3-mile column of cars into three distinct pieces…call them mile 1, mile 2 and mile 3. Mile 1 is at the front of the line, and mile 3 is at the back of the line. Three chunks of cars…got that part? Let's focus on mile 1 ... the chunk closest to the highway. We are going to further break mile 1 into 4 "15-minute zones", each a quarter of a mile. "Pulsers" (that's what we call our fearless volunteers) will be at the front of each of the zones, and they will systematically release cars from zone-1 until it is empty. During this time, zones 2-3-4 are NOT MOVING AT ALL! They don't need to be creeping, they don't even need to be running their engines. Furthermore, those zones know how long they will not be moving for, so they can plan their extra-vehicular activities accordingly. Then we release zone 2...then zone 3...then zone 4... Now, here is where it really gets awesome. Remember Mile 2 and Mile 3? They are sitting, not creeping also. In fact, they sit, not creeping, for a full hour. And at the end of that hour, when mile 1 is empty, gate road is "pulsed" forward one whole mile. Mile 1 refills, and the process repeats itself.
NOTE ABOUT EXTRAVEHICULAR ACTIVITY WHILE WAITING TO PULSE: This is not a time for vehicle drivers to start drinking beer. Law Enforcement will be present, and driving on gate road under the influence is the same as driving under the influence anywhere...still illegal. And, you are preparing for a long drive...time to be sober. YOU: Wow, that was confusing and hard to understand. That's OK. That's why we have BMIR (94.5FM), that's why we have pulsers with megaphones on the ground, and that's why we have signage. We will do the work to make the system fair…you can sit back and reap the benefits. YOU: This is the greatest thing I have ever heard. I want to help with the process. (OR) This is dumb and I want to email someone and let them know. If you think you have what it takes, Exodus is still accepting applications to be pulsers. If you have feedback on the Traffic Pulsing System, we would love to hear. In either case, email exodus@burningman.com YOU: Will you let me know how it worked after the Exodus? We will. We have high hopes for the Traffic Pulsing System (TPS), and we hope it goes as planned with the planned benefits. At any rate, there will be a post-event TPS report. Yes, we just said that.

DO NOT PASS ... DO NOT GET KILLED
We were going say this ourselves, but Leslie, who wrote in asking us to remind participants about this important issue, is pretty spot on, and she has particular cred in this department, as she notes: "I was struck head-on by a person passing and my car was left three feet shorter. I suffered unbelieveable pain, spent time in a wheelchair and in physical rehabilitation as the result of his one bad choice to pass. Much of what was good in my life has been taken from me as a result."
So ... please take a moment to read and consider her invaluable advice ... since we prefer our Burners alive, thank you. She writes:
"Please, while driving to and from the event do not pass at all between the freeway and the event. Passing simply isn't safe and can lead to fatal head-on collisions. Full-size 18 wheelers regularly use these roads and go the opposite directions from the main traffic at high speeds; they are not watching out for you at all.
You simply cannot count on other drivers in a long line of cars bumper to bumper leaving Burning Man to hang back and let you back into the line when an oncoming vehicle is coming at you head-on at 55-85 mph. The delay for just not passing and patiently following the car in front of you may be only a few additional minutes. The cost of passing may be your life.
Besides, when everyone is in a line to leave Burning Man it is just selfish and pointless to pass an entire line of cars as if they didn't want to go faster. We all have to put up with slowly leaving the playa.
One year while leaving Burning Man I saw a catastrophic accident as the result of someone passing. I've also seen numerous near misses that would have resulted in severe head-on collisions, some with full size 18 wheelers going over 40 mph, that would have killed everyone in the car.
Many people who go to Burning Man just do not understand or appreciate the risk."

YOUR MOM DOESN'T LIVE HERE: WHERE TO TAKE YOUR TRASH AND RECYCLING
First off, please make sure and fully SECURE YOUR LOAD so that you don't have any random bits and bobs falling off as you drive on the highways. Second, and this really should go without saying, never ever ever dump your trash on the side of the road. Leave No Trace does NOT end at the edge of Black Rock City ... no sir, it doesn't.
Where can you get rid of your trash and recycling that you've carefully packed and secured to your vehicle? Answers here, along with some helpful hints from the Nevada Highway Patrol about getting to and from the playa safely:

RENTING A VEHICLE? CLEAN IT THOROUGHLY ... INCLUDING THE ENGINE
If you're renting a car or RV, you want to clean the living hell out of it, INCLUDING the engine ... you might get dinged for an extra fee if you don't. To clean the engine, you can use one of those air blower hose things at a gas station. And, returning rental cars in bad shape reflects badly on our community and risks our people's future ability to rent cars.

Well, things have come full circle. The DPW and big art crews are out on the playa, working their tails off in 119 degree heat (!!!) to build the infrastructure of Black Rock City, and we are lucky to have John Curley back on the scene this year, covering it all through his incredible photographs and wonderful words. This week we've read about the Man base, the Temple construction, and the wild appreciation of a good playa rainbow. You can follow his whole series here on the Burning Blog:
http://blog.burningman.com/category/building-brc/
Here at BMHQ, we're getting seriously psyched. Most all of us (those who aren't there already) head for the playa this week, and everything's revving up just right for this year's Burn. Things are clicking along nicely, everybody's making their plans, and concocting their costumes, their schemes, their camps, their transporation, their pranks, and their hot pants. We're hooking up our pets with sitters, double-checking our insurance coverage, and putting our inhibitions up on the shelf for safe keeping. And we trust you're doing the same.
Coming up in the remaining issues: the Transportation issue, with everything you'll need to know to get TO Burning Man, already! We'll keep this short, since the rest is so long (sorry ... such is the month of August in Burning Manlandia!), but we will occupy your time long enough to say ...
We will see all your bright shining faces soon! Now, get on your horse and ride! THE MAN BURNS...IN 18 days!

DISTRICT EVERYWHERE ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS -- COME BY!
Once again, the outreach groups of Burning Man (Burners Without Borders, The Black Rock Arts Foundation, Black Rock Solar and The Regional Network) have teamed up to create a unified presence on the playa: District Everywhere!
District Everywhere is housed under one large pavilion. This year, our interior space will take on the appearance of a large world map, with continents cut out of wood, set up at table height. With the assistance of our World Domination Team, guests will create miniature sculptures or flags to represent their off-playa projects and endeavors.
Together, the outreach groups will also host interactive activities, art projects, events and gatherings, all geared toward kindling ideas and generating momentum for off-playa, after-Burning Man outreach efforts.
Join us for daily BurnSide Chats, hosted lectures, salons and discussions about art, community and culture. Each outreach group will also be hosting cocktail parties and mixers specifically for their group at District Everywhere. Stop by to see the full schedule for the week.
Please visit BRAF any day of the week to learn more about recent projects and future endeavors, and to add to our community-created art installation. We will be lounging in the shade, sipping lemonade and conspiring to bring interactive art to communities beyond the playa.
Burnside Chats Monday, August 30, 2010 - Saturday, September 4, 2010 1:00 pm - 2:30 pm, and 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm
Party Everywhere - opening reception for District Everywhere Monday, August 30, 2010 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Annual BRAF Playa Cocktail Party Thursday, September 2, 2010 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
District Everywhere is located at 6:30 and Esplanade.
We'd love to see you!

PORTA POTTY PROTOCOLS
It's really this simple: If we lose porta-potties, Burning Man will stop.
We continue to talk about this because there are still problems each year from abuse, neglect, or flat out impropriety!
If an item in the pottie cannot be sifted through a small screen at the processing plant, it cannot go in the potty. For example - baby wipes, condoms, tampons, etc. And no, even the flushable baby wipes cannot go in the potties. They don't break down fast enough to be called "flushable" in the porta potties. ONE PLY TOILET PAPER only. If you need to get rid of anything of that nature while you're in a potty, bring a plastic baggie and take it back to camp. Yes, really.
If it doesn't come out of your body, it doesn't go in the potty. Period.

THREE TRULY "PUBLIC" PLAZAS
Along Jakarta Street near the back of the city, you will find no fewer than three new plazas: at 3:00, 6:00, & 9:00. We are holding most of the camping space around these plazas unreserved and available for the general public to develop and maintain as a Metropolis-theme experiment in spontaneous urban planning and collaboration.
So, what do you want to do with them? We can't wait to see.

PRE-EVENT ICE SALES AT ARCTICA
For those who were approved to arrive pre-event to set up a registered theme camp or art installation (i.e., you have your Early Arrival Pass in hand - NO, there are no more requests), Camp Arctica will offer ice sales (only) at their Center Camp location from Thursday, August 26 - Sunday August 29, from 1pm-3pm daily.
Cool! So to speak.

USING A PERSONAL USE VIDEO CAMERA IN BRC? READ THIS
Burning Man defines "personal use" of imagery as "that which will only be shared with friends and family." For still camera images of this nature, no registration is required, but all video cameras, even personal use, must fill out an agreement in order to capture imagery in BRC.
The form and fuller information can be found here: http://www.burningman.com/preparation/event_survival/video_cameras.html
Print out the form now and save yourself a few minutes by having it all filled out and ready when you get to the Greeters!
A NOTE ABOUT VIDEO-CAPABLE PHONES: We know that more and more people are choosing to carry their video-capable smartphones in BRC. While attaching a camera tag to these cameras can be a daunting concept, the fact is, all video cameras that will operate in BRC do need to be tagged visibly, so expect to be asked to affix the Tyvek camera tag somehow to your phone's body (clear tape is probably the surest bet).
However, no, we don't need to tag your camera if you're going to put it in your glovebox and never use it on the playa, so the question at Greeters will be: "Do you plan to use your camera to obtain video footage in Black Rock City?" If you think you'll shoot any video footage whatsoever, then yes, you must fill out this form.
So really...why? This little act on your part helps create the "safety net" of expectation that protects you from being filmed by unscrupulous videographers without approval, and that's part of what's kept Burning Man vital and free from those who would exploit us for prurient purposes. We truly appreciate everyone contributing by tagging their video cameras and filling out this little form.
Not sure if yours is personal use or something more? Curious if you can share your pics with your Facebook friends or post video on a personal website? More information can be found at

PROMOTE YOUR CAMP WITH A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT ON BMIR-FM!
BMIR-FM, 94.5 is The Voice of the Man and is the best way to let Black Rock City know about what your camp has to offer be it a fabulous bar, an event, a performance or a really cool art installation.
If someone in your camp is an audio wizard, we are now accepting pre-recorded announcements. We would LOVE to have them in hand before we leave for the playa so we can start running them on the air ASAP. Not sure how to record something ahead of time? No worries! J Kanizzle, BMIR's Production Manager has put together this handy tutorial that shows you how to download and configure Audacity, a free audio recording program. The tutorial then takes you through the basics of creating your very own announcement.
The tutorial can be found at : http://tinyurl.com/mn55p5
Once you have something recorded please email before August 21st to: BMIR@Burningman.com
Remember to let people know the basics : what, where and when. Please keep announcements under 60 seconds and send them to us in .mp3 or .wav format.
Can't make the August 21st deadline? You can also put your announcements on a CD or flash drive and hand deliver them to us on the playa. BMIR is located on the Ring Road at 1:00, right between the Rangers and The Department of Mutant Vehicles.
Now if you just can't pull this off, no worries. The BMIR Production Office will be open every day from 12N to 4PM during the event. You can come in and we'll help you record an announcement right on the playa.
See you on the playa and remember to bring an FM radio!

PSA: PLEASE DO NOT CHARGE YOUR ELECTRONIC DEVICES AT THE CAFE
We know, you just have to keep your camera/phone/blinky glowy thingie charged at the event, and there's no electrical service available. So you're bringing your own power, right?
No? You're not? Then make friends with someone who is. Or bring an inverter for your car lighter...whatever it takes. But whatever you do, please DON'T plug in your devices to charge them up at the Center Camp Cafe.
While it may be tempting to wander into the Cafe, find an outlet or an extension cord, and plug in your (whatever) electronic device(s) to charge them ...don't. This goes double for ever unplugging another cord to plug yours in. There is sensitive equipment plugged into each and every outlet in the Cafe, (we don't build outlets we don't need in BRC, so if there's a cord, it's there for someone else - not you). There are dozens of people working hard to balance an enormously tricky electrical load on a very persnickety system -- all in a place known for devouring the best electrical intentions. Don't make it worse. This is not the purpose of the power in the Cafe and these outlets are not available for participants to use. Just don't do it.

PETS WHILE YOU ARE ON PLAYA
Our friend Michelle (aka Scottish, who we love dearly and wish she were coming to the playa, dammit) writes with helpful advice about your leaving your pets at home while you're at the event:
"If your pet has a tag, change it. The new temporary tag should have the number of the pet sitter. If it doesn't have a collar and tag, get one. They can come off when you are again taking responsibility for your pet. There is no point having your number on it while you are incommunicado.
Also, make sure you email recent pictures of your pet and any distinguishing marks to the sitter should they need to make up any lost notices. This will help them as they will already feel pretty crap about the missing pet.
Have fun out there kids.
Michelle"

HELPFUL TIP ABOUT YOUR CAR'S AIR FILTER
Dan writes:
"I have a little auto tip (if it has not already been mentioned).
As I transistion from the main road to the playa, usually waiting in a line, I get out, open the hood of my car and swap the almost new air filter with the old dirty one from last time on the playa. When I leave the playa, I do the reverse, giving me a nice clean air filter for the drive home; better performance and better fuel economy."

COFFEE PRICE INCREASE
The whole world is feeling the economic pinch, and Burning Man is no exception. The costs involved with providing coffee on playa has increased in the last year, and so after many years we must now raise Center Camp Cafe coffee prices from $2 to $3 a cup.
Now, before you go getting too worked up with your faithful Rabbits or your nice Cafe staff about this increase or about the sale of coffee in our Center Camp in general, we ask you to please take the time to read "Commerce and Community" by Larry Harvey. This article from our 2006 newsletter dinstinctly outlines why coffee is sold at the Center Camp Cafe in the first place.
http://www.burningman.com/whatisburningman/2006/06_news_sum1.html
Then, recall that we're basically running a cafe on the surface of the moon. That costs a pretty penny. Plus, the proceeds from coffee sales go to financing the construction of the Cafe itself.

BLACK ROCK CENSUS NEEDS VOLUNTEERS
Steven writes:
"The Black Rock Census is now recruiting volunteers for on-playa shifts!
Basics: During the week, we need 2 volunteers from 9:30am-1:30pm every day for census form processing, and 10 volunteers on pre-burn Sunday/Monday and postburn Sunday for census setup/breakdown. More details about the shifts are below.
Contact: Please email Steven "Indiana" Crane (stevoc@stanford.edu) if you are interested. There will be a short follow-up survey to gauge your interest and volunteer shift availability. It is fine to request a shift with a friend, or to sign up yourself to meet a new friend! Let me know that you're interested even if you can't commit to a particular shift ahead of time.
More info: The Census Camp has been administering the Black Rock Census for ten years, and our team works year-round to craft, collect, count, and compile the census and its results. Last year we collected 8,300 forms (!) which are used by the Burning Man Organization to create the best burn possible for everybody; by Burners to get a broader, more unbiased perspective on who comes and what goes down on the playa; and even bona fide scientific research. Past results are available in the afterburn reports (http://afterburn.burningman.com). And we can't do all this without some extra help on-playa.
Daily form processing volunteers will work with our team in Center Camp and can partake in the Census Camp Metropolis Theme Days (read: snacks and drinks!) as we merrily work our way through the forms. Form processing volunteers will: —restock the Cafe and Playa Info census kiosks —retrieve completed census forms from the Cafe —process forms (placing numbered stickers on collected forms and properly grouping them) in the Confidentiality Room, adjacent to Media Mecca and across the street from the Cafe. Perfect for: Those who love organization and efficiency, or enjoy some simple, methodical, meditative form processing, or particularly enjoy stacking, counting, numbering, and bunching forms.
Setup/Breakdown volunteers will help decorate the camp and the Census Wagon art car, load up the wagon for our "trap line" of cross-playa census distribution, and other tasks to get the census up and running. Perfect for: those who like making things look FANTASTIC, who have always wanted to do some work with an art car. Some height and/or muscle would be helpful, but not necessary!
-For more details, questions, and to sign up for a shift, contact Steven 'Indiana' Crane atstevoc@stanford.edu."

PIGEONOPOLIS: POOP & GROUP PHOTO ON FRIDAY

"We're so excited to hear about happy pigeon-makers across the country making paper-mache pigeons for Pigeonopolis 2010. For example, just look at these beautiful pigeons that Sari made! http://flic.kr/p/8qgLZc We've also heard from some of you concerned about our cleanup plan. We are also worried about POOP (Pigeons Out Of Place), so we've written up a blog post to address these concerns.
http://j.mp/POOPopolis
We've also scheduled a Pigeonopolis group photo at 4:00pm Friday at the Man. That will help us get lots of our beloved pigeons all in the same place at once. We also ask any participants that may find stray pigeons to bring them there before Friday at 10pm.
Need Supplies? - Balloons: We have TONS of extra water balloons, we'd be happy to mail you some if you need them. - Skewers: We have a bag of 100. Need some to keep your pigeons in place? Come by Recycle Camp anytime! - Paint: We'll also be bringing our iridescent paints with us to the playa, so if you want to add that extra touch to your pigeons, come by Recycle Camp. Bring beer. In aluminum cans. You know, to ... uh ... recycle.

Starting line is near Center Camp and the Prominade - you can’t miss it. PLAYA CHOIR SEEKS PERFORMERS OF ALL TYPES
Madi writes:
"Looking for something to participate in this year? Need an experience that will help ground your burn? Do you love to sing/play drums, keys, or percussion? Interested in having a crazy-fierce, passionate, dynamic choir director (clad in pig-tails, combat boots and as little clothing as possible) pull the music out of you like taffy? Would you like to perform with a choir/rhythm section on the playa on Sunday morning for a couple hundred exhausted, wide-open, smiling, joyful, half-naked burners who are not quite ready to enter the default world just quite yet? COME JOIN MADI'S PLAYA CHOIR! Here are the details:
We rehearse: wed, thurs, fri and sat at 10:30 am at the Jazz Cafe, 4:30 and INNER CIRCLE (right close to center camp)
We will sing for:
Critical Tits ritual, Friday afternoon (we create a singing human entry-way for all the women who finish the ride!) Megs's boat, deets TBA Our very own Sunday Celebration on Sunday morning at 11am in the Center round of Center Camp
We will learn 4 songs, plus an improvised circle song, plus a sing along for the congregation on Sunday morning. We generally do gospel/spirituals, mostly 3-4 parts, not difficult but for sure soulful! If you can not read music, it's OK. If you can sing along with your section, you'll learn the parts just fine! There are solo opportunities if you are interested!
This is our 5th year on the playa and we are growing like wildfire!
If you are interested, shoot me an email with your name (if you send me a picture too, I will remember your name with your face) and say hello. I'll add you to our emails so you know what else is going on.
If you are interested, PLEASE BRING A MILK CRATE TO REHEARSAL! (unless someone out there wants to DONATE a set of choral risers to our mission) and of course, lots and lots of water, spray bottles and whatever you need to help you through a generally hot and dusty choir rehearsal.
The choir needs a rhythm section, too...we need a trap set drummer, a second keyboard player would help get me out from behind the rhodes, hand drummers/congas/djembe players and possibly a guitarist...(we have a bass player already...)
You can reach me at: madis_service@yahoo.com "

CREATE YOUR OWN ANIMATIONS FOR THE ILLUMINATRIX
This is awesome. Scottie writes:
"The Illuminatrix is an art project sponsored by the More Carrot Theme Camp which is to be located 50ft from the corner of 5:30 and Baghdad. It consists of an 2D array of 256 (16x16) ping pong balls each of which has an RGB LED that allows it to be illuminated with any colour of the rainbow. In order to make the project interactive, we've set up a website (www.cwd.co.uk/illuminatrix) which allows anyone to easily create animations of their own. For those that are technically minded there's even the facility to enter JavaScript to generate animations procedurally. After you're happy with your design, you can save it and then visit the Illuminatrix at Burning Man to see your creations on the big screen. Naturally the more patterns we get, the more successful the project will be so if you think it a worthy endevour, please send this link on to your friends.
Thanks in advance and have a great burn!

Our memory banks can hold a couple hundred thousand sequences, so we are trying to get as many people as possible to make one. BURNING MAN 2010 WORLD CUP SOCCER SEEKS VOLUNTEERS
Ben writes:
"The BM World Cup 2010 is an interactive art project that represents a colorful and psychedelic miniature version of the FIFA soccer World Cup, with games played mainly at night. A small soccer field will be set up, delineated with EL wire. The format will be 3 vs 3 players, wearing glow-in-the-dark uniforms and using a lighted soccer ball.
We are seeking participants to help organize some of the games, referee, or come cheer as themed spectators or cheerleaders. DJs are welcome to come play music too, or anyone who wants to add to the event with performances, etc.

BLACK ROCK CITY NAKED BICYCLE PUB CRAWL
Yes, you read that right. Shocking, I know.
"Black Rock City Naked Bicycle Pub Crawl: There have been rumors of the ride's demise, but it is not so!!! For the past six years, Dale organized and ran the mid-week Naked Bike Ride & Pub Crawl. He's decided to take a break this year, but for some folks this event has become a staple of their BM experience and the ride MUST go on! FIVE camps have stepped up this year to host pub stops. Wednesday 11am-2pm -- see where-what-when or Playa Events Calendar for more details. See y'all at The Man on Wednesday @11!"

BIG BLUE MARBLE SEEKS ARTISTS PROMOTING SUSTAINABLE AWARENESS
Vanessa writes:
"Big Blue Marble is an environmental non-profit that is headed to the Playa! We have already been vetted by through the Media Mecca approval process and we are headed to Burning Man to film interviews with artists looking at the connection between environmental awareness and creativity. BBM seeks to educate others on environmental issues through art and creative mediums. We are interested in looking at the positive change comes through Burning Man, the art created, and the diversity of forms this takes.
We are making a call out to artists who use their craft to create sustainable awareness. Recycled art, Spoken Word, Sculpture, Visual Painting, Photography, or Art expressed simply through the way you live your Life - whatever your form may be, we want to hear from you!
Our goal is not to simply document this event; we want to hear the personal stories of those who come, why they come and why Burning Man has turned into a movement, branching off into regional networks and for some people become an intricate part of their lifestyle. The project is an interactive project that is about connecting people. It is about showing people the power of community and art, and how both individual and collective action can make a very important environmental difference. We are looking to talk to people who are both environmentally aware and are using their art or daily actions to make an environmental and/or communal difference.
For more information on Big Blue Marble check out our website at www.bigbluemarbleinc.org
If you're interested in being interviewed please contact Vanessa at vanessa@bigbluemarbleinc.org sending along information about your creative process, artistic and sustainable views, and where we can find you on the Playa!
Thanks so much! Cheers, Vanessa"

VETERAN PHOTOGRAPHER SEEKS COLLABORATORS WHO LOVE IMPROV
William writes:
"Purpose: to help with art photography project -- a Legacy project spanning the first 21 years of Burning Man. We'll work each afternoon and evening.
Don't worry, I don't need a photo assistant to help with gear. It's much better than that. I need theatre-people, radical socializers, natural performers who love to energize juicy social interactions among burners, and with their permission and interest, to be photographed. These aren't posed pictures, this is spontaneous play with a few ground rules, or cues, kind of call and response, like a theatresports game, like an ole-time church full of footstampers, or in our case, celebrants.
If you are comfortable and adept in public, theatrical, bit of an improviser, schmoozer, bit of a ham also, love to interact with folks -- and can direct without seeming to do so -- I love ya! Lets collaborate on making beautiful work happen and dispense joy and laughs in our wake.
Hours: I need someone(s) every day from mid-afternoon to late. Perhaps a tag team of folks, pass the baton, who all like to cruise the playa with a purpose to make art as we go!!
I'm one of the original 80-90 burners on that first year on the playa, 1990. I got involved earlier, having met Larry that last night when we couldn't burn on Baker Beach. I've been fortunate to attend and photograph BM every year since. My calling is to create what I'm calling a Legacy Project, an archive of fine art photography I've shot at the event every single year, and counting. For the first 15 years I shot film in medium format, 35mm and 8x10. Today of course it's digital.
For a taste, check a suite of images I shot solo from 2008 (currently the only body of work on BM I have on the web)>

BURNING MAN FILM FESTIVAL/PLAYA LAUNCH PARTY READY FOR RENO
RENO, NV - Just in time before this year’s Burning Man event, The Knitting Factory is proud to host the official Burning Man Film Festival / Playa Launch Party on Thursday, August 19th from 4-10pm.
Three award winning documentaries will exclusively be seen on several big screens from 4-8pm. The Burning Man Film Festival is offered in part as a fundraising effort to support the current art installation “Duel Nature” by Kate Raudenbush – currently on display on the Riverwalk in downtown Reno, Nevada. The Reno Burners LLC group will also benefit from proceeds from the film festival and related sales.
Full length features will be shown, including:
“Burning Man” (1991) by Larry Harvey “Burning Man MCMXCVII” (1997) by Chuck Cirino “Beyond Black Rock” (2002) by Mike Wilson & Damon Brown
The Playa Launch Party starts at 8pm, with dance music from DJ’s direct from the playa, electric poi spinner, hoopers, and and amazing line up of surprise guests, activities and entertainment not to be missed. Additional short films will be shown throughout the evening to welcome seasoned burners and “newbies” to the art and culture that is Burning Man.
Tickets to the festival are just $10 at the door for those in costume, and $15 without Burning Man costumes.
Proceeds from the event will benefit Black Rock Arts Foundation’s current installation in downtown Reno, as well as establishing an ongoing fund to develop more locally placed art installations, from Burning Man, throughout northern Nevada.
“This Film Festival and Pre-Playa Launch Party is a great way to experience the rich history and culture of Burning Man, for both loyal “Burners” and those who have never been to the event. With the Knitting Factory’s generous support, we are planning a great night of film, fun, and Burning Man culture,” said Maria Partridge, Reno project liaison for BRAF and Advisory Board member.
“We are proud to sponsor and host this cultural event just before Burning Man which happens the week before Labor Day.” said Dean Hanson, The Knitting Factory (Reno) General Manager. “Burning Man’s rich history and culture offer great art to northern Nevada, and we are eager to support the Black Rock Arts Foundation’s installations and future plans here in Reno”.
WHEN: Thursday, August 19th, 2010: 4pm to 10pm WHERE: The Knitting Factory, 211 North Virginia Street, Reno, NV WHAT: Burning Man Film Festival: benefiting the Black Rock Arts Foundation and Burning Man Reno. Knitting Factory bars will available for attendees 21+ years old.

PHOTOGRAPHS IN THE ROUND - PANORAMICS BY BRAD MILTON
This is pretty neat. Brad Milton writes:
"I'd like to share my photo gallery:
www.bp2e.net/album.html
I hope your readers might see these photos and like them enough to support my project 'Living Working Burning Man' ( http://kck.st/9EDgl4 ) which will document the fabric of Black Rock City for this year of Metropolis: the Life of Cities.
Project brief: It is my intention to photograph as many of the outstanding camps of Black Rock City as I can, and to photograph them 'in the round' – broad panoramas capturing all of the activity in the space, as well as the space itself, all in an instant. The resulting portfolio will document the effort put forward by the campers and the incredible environments they create. A fitting response to this years theme: Metropolis - Life of Cities.
Clearly I think it's a worthy project. I hope the burning Man community does as well."

Granted, you're going to pretty much destroy yourself on playa, we know that. You're going to stay up too late, go too hard, not sleep enough, not drink enough water, abuse your feet, crash into something, put your you-know-what you-know-where in some ill-advised manner, and your nose is going to HATE you. It's part of the fun, right? Right.
Well, as much fun as this can be, do take care of yourselves ... and if you get in a bit over your head in one way or another, we're here to help with some quality advice from our head of Emergency Services, and a sympathetic pat on the back (that will sting the hell out of that sunburn).
The moral of the story here is: while there are professional medical services at your disposal, exercise radical self-reliance. Don't become a burden on others (besides drinking the last beer in the cooler) ... come prepared!
Be safe, be healthy, and Burn like hell!

HEALTH AND SAFETY FAQ
Q: What do I do if I get hurt or sick on the playa?
A: We hope, of course, that you won't get sick or hurt...but being radically self-reliant also means remembering to bring a first aid kit (http://bit.ly/Afd8M) and treating yourself or your campmates for minor first aid needs. Should your illness or injury be more severe than you can manage without help, there are Emergency Services Department (ESD) medical stations on the 3:00 and 9:00 plazas and at Center Camp. Look for the red LED cross on top of the buildings. These stations are staffed by emergency health providers (doctors, nurses, medics, etc.) and most donate their time and medical expertise as their gift to the community.
Q: What if they can't manage my problem?
A: If the on-site medical providers feel that you have a medical emergency that requires a higher level of care than can be provided on the playa, you may need to visit a hospital in Reno. Depending on the seriousness of your condition, that can be accomplished by either getting a ride from a friend or being transported by an ambulance or helicopter. Remember to bring your ID, insurance card, cell phone and wallet when you go. Also note that if you get transported by ambulance or helicopter you'll need to arrange for a friend to pick you up after your hospital visit. There are no shuttles from the hospitals back to the playa.
Q: Is there a clinic in Gerlach?
A: The Gerlach Medical Center http://bit.ly/XMdC is open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays, 8 AM - 1 PM and 1:45 PM - 6:15 PM. This small family medicine clinic offers limited urgent care, laboratory, x-ray, and women's health services.
Q: Does the Gerlach Medical Center accept Insurance?
A: The Medical Center welcomes most private insurance, Medicaid, Medicare, as well as several Nevada programs. A sliding fee schedule for low-income patients who do not have insurance is available. Identification and income information is needed to enroll in the sliding fee program.
Q: Where can I get a prescription filled?
A: It's best to bring adequate supplies that you need to the playa. Should you need to get a prescription refilled, though, often the closest pharmacies are in Fernley or Reno.

BEING TAKEN FOR A (HELICOPTER) RIDE
The most expensive ride on the playa is the one you never want to take: an emergency medical helicopter transport to one of the Reno hospitals. Even if you have insurance it still might leave you with a bill for several thousand dollars that your insurance won't cover. Of course it is considerably worse if you have no insurance at all since medically-necessary air transport may cost up to $20,000!
Every year, it seems, we hear a story or two of a Burner who gets airlifted off playa only to practically need to be resuscitated when they receive their bill. Given that only a few dozen get airlifted every year, your chances are good that you'll never need it but if you have a complicated pre- existing condition or just want to have some extra coverage "just in case" it is worth considering the Flight Plan Membership that Care Flight offers. Their program covers your entire family for $55/year and also applies to other air medical services in California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and Wyoming. Non-Nevada residents are eligible for this program. See their web site for all the details and fine print:

RANTING AND RAILING
If you are planning on building an elevated platform of any kind please make sure you plan for railings to be built on each level and that they need to be well designed and strong. We recommend you research the many styles, designs and ways to accomplish this. We trust you will come up with an option that fits the style and feel of your project. You can expect your platform to be inspected occasionally throughout the event to make sure that the railing is in place and appears safe. Why mention it? Because falling off the edge of a raised platform can be really embarrassing... and if they are really unlucky it can seriously injure them. And you don't want that to happen, right?

BLUE LIGHT SPECIAL AT THE MAN BURN
Burn night can be chaotic (to say the least) when everyone crowds around the Man. Big crowds can be so much fun but way less so when you need help and can't seem to find it. To take the guesswork out of finding help ESD has created safety contact points outside the Burn circle. One is located on the 3 o'clock side of the Man and the other is located on the 9 o'clock side of the Man. Both of them are along the promenade just on the edge of the crowd. Each contact point is marked by a bright blue rotating emergency beacon and both tend to be easily visible from the edge of the crowd. Each rally point has a host of resources dedicated to it in case there is a need, including Black Rock Rangers, Law Enforcement, ESD Medical, ESD Fire and REMSA. Just walk up and ask and the right resource will follow you back to where you need help, especially since finding a specific location in the mass of people is very difficult when it's solely based on a verbal report.

WHY IT'S A GOOD IDEA TO CARRY YOUR ID ON THE PLAYA
Reasons? We gots three of them!
1. In case you get hurt on playa and get transported while unconscious we can identify you. 2. In case you get arrested and have to prove your identity to law enforcement. 3. If you're lucky enough to look under 21 and you want a drink in any camp that serves alcohol.

THE *KEY* PART OF PREPARING YOUR VEHICLE FOR THE PLAYA
Every year, Burners some how, some ways lock their keys in their car (it happened least 100 times in 2009 alone). Worse yet, some flat out lose their keys -- big bummer and big $$$.
So, for a little playa preparation and to save you some time and money (upwards of $300 it has been rumored) to have a locksmith come out to help you,
MAKE AN EXTRA KEY. If you are renting a car - take the time to stop and get an extra key made or ask for one from the rental company. Then place the extra key in a secure location outside of your car when you arrive. Hassle avoided!

GET YOUR FILL OF FUEL
Here is some good advice on the storage of fuel:
Propane cylinders are designed to work best at a maximum fill of 70% -- over filling combined with higher altitude and extreme heat (sunlight) may cause a cylinder to self-vent through its pressure relief system. Since propane is heavier than air (when in a gaseous state) it will seek low ground when vented.
Liquid fuels will likewise expand in their containers when exposed to sunlight and heat. Don't fill tanks or containers to capacity - leave room for expansion. Liquid fuel containers also need to have a lined overflow berm built up around them, so should any fuel expand and escape the container it will be caught rather than seep into the playa. The berms should be lined with a tarp or plastic to prevent fuel from soaking into the playa. If a significant amount of fuel is released - contact ESD and we'll send our Hazardous Materials Unit out to assess (a significant amount is enough that it does not evaporate rapidly i.e. it remains in a puddle).
Most importantly: Store fuels in well ventilated and shaded areas with a fire extinguisher nearby. And of course away from ignition sources.

DR LASER LOVE
...or how I learned to play with lasers safely.
Yes, we all love us some lasers on the playa, but before you fire up your light show, please do some basic homework to ensure your project is safe. Lasers are by no means toys and they can cause blindness, fires and other problems if set up improperly or if the incorrect equipment is used. Remember to install the lasers in such a way that they point above eye level, as the beam can temporarily or permanently blind people.
Get ready by checking out some on-line laser safety resources: On-line Courses: http://bit.ly/bEA0k Laser Light Show Safety: http://bit.ly/xi7h8 Informative: http://bit.ly/13BLjK Regulatory: http://bit.ly/Yt6zY
If you are going to have a laser set up on-playa and no one in your camp is a laser professional consider these tips:
* Use the lowest power laser that will effectively work for your needs and use it at the lowest power settings to accomplish your effect. * Treat laser operations as a serious safety matter. * Ensure all operators are sober. * Designate a laser safety officer to make sure your lasers are being operated safely. * If your laser operates automatically or without an operator, having a laser safety officer monitoring the system is just as important to ensure nothing goes wrong with its safe operation.
If you have related non-technical questions about the use of lasers at Burning Man, please direct them to:

EMERGENCY CONTACT ON-PLAYA FAQ
Q: Where should I go to check for emergency messages that might be waiting for me?
A: The only place on-playa that serves as a central collection point for emergency messages is Playa Info. While the Rangers, ESD, REMSA or Law Enforcement *may* have the relevant information only Playa Info serves as the clearinghouse for all such messages.
Q: What if friends or family at home need to reach me for an emergency?
A: Unfortunately, given the nature of the event, finding a participant on the playa is usually quite challenging. Cell phones often don't work and people don't generally have satellite phones. There is limited Internet access. Now add the fact that addresses on the playa are inexact even if you *do* know where you're camping ahead of time and finding a person's camp can become very difficult. Preparation will help you stay in touch in an emergency.
Q: How can friends or family send me a message?
A: Emergency messages should be sent via http://911.burningman.com/ . The message will be passed to the Black Rock Rangers who, if they have the extra resources, will attempt to deliver it. We will also make the message available at Playa Info in Center Camp, so if you're awaiting bad news or anticipating emergency messages, you might want to plan to check in there each day.
Q: What details should be included in an emergency message?
A: The message should include first and last name as well as any known nickname that you might go by around camp. It should also include the name of your theme camp or other affiliation (volunteer team, etc.), and its location if known, along with your vehicle make/license plate and any other unique features that will help with the search (such as, "camp has a 20 foot inflatable duck," etc.)
Q: What can prevent me from getting the message?
A: Just a few of the variables that can get in the way: your camp relocates, or nobody's ever in camp when we come to find you; your camp spot is obscured from view by other camps; the 20 foot inflatable duck deflates due to a leak; there are three camps with 20-foot inflatable ducks, and none of the neighbors know anyone named "Chris" because you have been introducing yourself all week as "Captain Underpants, Lord of the Duck People!" You get the picture.
In other words, you're heading to the middle of the desert, and there is no guarantee that we'll be able to deliver a message in an emergency; it's important to weigh that before you leave home. If you are awaiting news, you can actively check in at Playa Info, and in truly dire circumstances, you can take the bus into Gerlach to use the pay phone, cellular coverage, or free wifi coverage there.

I GOT STRANDED AT A RENO HOSPITAL AND ALL I GOT WAS THIS BACKLESS GOWN
So you wake up and you realize you are in a hospital bed. Then you remember that you didn't put any money or your mobile phone in the pockets of your fun fur outfit you wore out to the party by the trash fence. Worse yet, now you are being told you are going to be discharged in 24 hours. How do you get back to the playa?
Your friends on the playa of course! But how to get a message to them? Simply call (866) 580-5350 and follow the instructions to leave a message. Instantly your message gets transmitted to Playa Info, the Rangers, Emergency Services and the Gerlach Burning Man office. If anyone contacts us looking for you at any of these places, we'll be able to relay a message to the parties looking for you so they can send a rescue party to pick up you (and more beer) in Reno.
Please note, if you have access to email please contact us that way instead of via a voice mail as we have no easy way of calling you back at the hospital, especially if they discharge you.
LOOKING FOR SOMEONE MISSING ON PLAYA? The only place on-playa that serves as a central collection point for emergency messages is Playa Info. While the Rangers, ESD, REMSA or Law Enforcement *may* have the relevant information only Playa Info serves as the clearinghouse for all such messages.

ADOPT-AN-INTERSECTION IN BLACK ROCK CITY
Unfortunately some people like to steal the street signs from BRC on their way out of the event. While this may be a cool souvenir for some it causes havoc for the medical crews, fire trucks, Black Rock Rangers and other resources by making it difficult to find the location of those who need help in an emergency.
We'd really implore everyone, as a best-case scenario, to leave the street signs where they are on your way out of the city. Obviously most people are not guilty of stealing street signs, but there will always be those that persist... so we are asking some of you wonderful and awesome burners to help by adopting an intersection.
A simple way to help everyone...
The idea was inspired a few years ago when participants spontaneously improvised street signs to make it possible to navigate the city in absence of the originals. Using some cardboard, a marker, and some duct tape it's possible to make a legible replacement with just a little effort, if you find a sign that's missing. It will not only help all the emergency responders but it will also be of great help to your fellow citizens of Black Rock City. It's a small act that makes a big difference.

FREQUENCY COORDINATION: ARE YOU USING TWO-WAY RADIOS ON THE PLAYA?
Are you planning on using two-way radio for any reason (greater than 5 watts) on the playa? The Emergency Services Department coordinates spectrum and systems to alleviate and proactively avoid interference between various projects on-playa and the Burning Man radio infrastructure.
Please note that in general, we do not coordinate AM or FM broadcast radio, WiFi, HAM, FRS (aka Talkabouts), CB, or RC bands. However if you are planning a high power radio application in any of these bands please let us know so we can isolate the signal in the RF noise floor in case of interference.
Please contact ESD Communications at http://911.burningman.com/ if you have questions or to register your frequency request.

"911" SERVICE IN BLACK ROCK CITY
If you heard a rumor that there is cellular phone coverage in Gerlach, your source would be right. If you have Nextel, AT&T or Verizon service, you'll be able to call 911 in case you need to report an emergency along parts of State Route 447, Gerlach or State Route 34.
On the very off chance you have a powerful enough phone to get a signal out in Black Rock City please do not call 911 for problems within the event site. The dispatch center you would eventually reach doesn't manage the available resources on playa. It's far faster to flag down a Ranger or send someone to fetch help at a Ranger Outpost or ESD Station. That said, there is a way to directly call for help wirelessly since ESD monitors a designated emergency channel on the license-free MURS (Multi User Radio Service) radio band.
MURS is a service similar to FRS (Family Radio Service, the frequencies that Motorola Talkabouts and similar radios use). FRS is extremely overcrowded and it's in use by thousands of participants during the event. FRS radios are also not powerful enough to effectively communicate throughout Black Rock City. MURS, in contrast, is currently not in common usage and legally can operate at a higher power so it can communicate across the entire playa.
We hope that reserving this "911" channel before MURS use becomes widespread at Burning Man will set the expectation that this channel will be for emergency use only. You will need to purchase your own MURS radio to contact ESD 911, but the other four MURS channels can also be just like FRS radios for other purposes. Large camps or villages might also choose to make one part of their group planning efforts and store it in a public place for emergency use.
Why do I want one of these when my FRS radio works just fine?
* If you're part of a large theme camp it could be a good investment to have a MURS radio around to call 911 for your group, especially if you have members who have known health issues or the risk of injury is of special concern.
* Large art projects working out on the open playa will be able to get help faster.
* Camps that are on the outer-rings of the city are far from a Emergency Services station don't have to send runners for help when an emergency arises.
* The other 4 channels on MURS can be a great alternative to the overcrowded FRS channels, especially if your camp has an art-car or event-wide project they want to coordinate.
* Emergency Services Dispatch cannot be reached on an FRS radio.
Calling 911 on a MURS radio:
Set your MURS radio to channel 5 (154.600 MHz, CTCSS/PL 97.4) to reach the Black Rock City Emergency Services Dispatch. Each brand has its own labeling system so please refer to your user manual to see how CTCSS/PL 97.4 is labeled. Common labels are: Code 11, 12, ZB, C, or C05. Using any other "privacy codes" on channel 5 will interfere with 911. Instead limit your personal use to channels 1-4.
FOR ALL MURS USERS: we ask that all Burning Man participants respect that channel 5 will be used as a 911 channel only. While the other channels are fine for use as an alternative to FRS we want to stress that channel 5 on MURS please be kept open for emergencies and not used for any other purpose.
An example of a compatible radio: Dakota Alert MURS portable (operational controls just like common FRS radios, with selectable channel and code on the display) $99 http://bit.ly/bmgDqI
If you have further questions or need help in finding a source for radios, please contact us for more information at:

THE BUREAU OF EROTIC DISCOURSE IS SEEKING B.E.D. BUDDIES
Come peek under our sheets!
Remember the signs in the porta-potties last year talking about how you can help prevent sexual assault? That was us! Remember the 'Clarity and Consent' workshops? That was us too! Maybe you got a sassy button from us talking about how "Even Porn Stars Ask First"?
Great news! We're back with our sex-positive message for 2010, and B.E.D. needs YOU (and you too, hot stuff!). We need your help to spread our message: If you're gonna have sex at Burning Man, we want to help you make sure it is incredible, consensual, hair-raising, amazing, consensual, hot, thrilling, CONSENSUAL sex!
There are many ways to climb into B.E.D! Head over to our Facebook page to join in the discussion. Check out our website, http://www.bureauoferoticdiscourse.org, and perhaps consider supporting us with a donation. You can also support us buy purchasing our playful B.E.D. gear to wear and show the citizens of BRC that YOU care about preventing sexual assault in our fair city. You will find all these links on our website.
Would you like to volunteer with us? Come to the volunteer orientation at our B.E.DrOOm at 12:00 noon on Tuesday. Look for the giant pink BED, conveniently located at the Dept. of Tethered Aviation, 9:00 on Ring Road, where it intersects 6:30 and Athens (near Center Camp).
The B.E.D. Theme Camp Challenge!
B.E.D. challenges all Burning Man Theme Camps to make sexual assault education part of their camp business. We are asking every camp to gather your members and discuss the issues and responsibilities of sexual exploration at Burning Man. How do you broach this sensitive subject? We have developed a short outline to help you out. Find it here:
http://bureauoferoticdiscourse.org/ThemeCampChallenge.php
Sign your camp up today!
B.E.D. thanks you for your help in continuing the Burning Man tradition of creating a city where we look out for each other and can explore our boundaries while feeling safely supported!"

THE BUREAU OF HEALTH PROTECTION SERVICES PERMIT INFORMATION
If you are planning to make and give away food to the public on the playa - drinks made from fresh squeezed juice, or even snow cones, you will need a permit from the Nevada State Health Division. You'll now find documents designated with a special flame icon specifically tailored for Burning Man on the Health Division's website. Here are the details and deadlines for this process from Cindy Ulch with the Nevada State Health Division's Frontier and Rural Public Health Program:
The only application any camp needs is the "Temporary Food Establishment Application for Food Vendor at Burning Man" found at http://health.nv.gov/BFHS_EHS.htm
DEADLINES:
Via Mail: we must have sufficient time to be able to process the application and send back a letter of confirmation. So they need to be received at Cindy's office in Winnemucca no later than one week before the event - MONDAY AUGUST 23TH.
Don't wait till the last minute. It would be a shame to have to cancel your plans, our even risk being cited for a health violation. That mailing address is NSHD - FaR Health 475 West Haskell Street Suite 52, Winnemucca, NV 89445.
In person: no later than THURSDAY AUGUST 26TH - 4150 Technology Way Suite 100 Carson City, NV. Phone: (775) 687-7550 or 475 West Haskell Street Suite 38 or 52 Winnemucca, NV. Phone (775) 623-6588.
After mailing the application and $50 USD payment, all anyone needs to do is come and pick up their permit at Playa Info in Center Camp during the following days and hours: Monday August 30th through Friday September 3rd 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM
We do this so that we can get an accurate camp location from which to do inspections. WE are NOT issuing new permits at Playa Info.
IMPORTANT: a number of camps last year did not complete the permit process by picking up their permit at playa info and receiving their inspection. Not completing the process is the same as not being permitted. Don't be shut down or issued a notice of violation. You must pick up your permit, provide an accurate location and be inspected to be in compliance.
ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS: Please contact Cindy Ulch (775) 623-6591 or email culch@health.nv.gov. You may also contact Ellen Kunz (775) 623-6588 or emailekunz@health.nv.gov in Cindy's absence.

HOW DO I KNOW IF I NEED A HEALTH DEPARTMENT PERMIT? READ ON!
Are you planning anything requiring large amounts of water? Are you hosting a large kitchen? Are you giving away food? Are you serving quantities of drinks over ice?
WATER
Large quantities of water (250 gallons+) being used for projects that entail full body contact or consumption by people must be "potable" and come from state health department approved water sources.
Water being used for misting systems, slip and slides and things that do not involve consumption do not need health department clearance. It is wise to make sure that you have "potable" water and the source is reputable!
Large public pools and showers will not be permitted. Art pieces involving water are not considered pools or showers unless they are labeled such and encourage bathing.
KITCHENS/ BARS or DRINKS
If you are providing beverages and/or food for your camp and friends, no health permit is needed.
PUBLIC kitchens of any sort need a permit. Remember, Burning Man does not allow the sale of anything at the event, including food. We have cultivated a gift economy. If you are caught selling or bartering food like currency the health department will shut you down -- if your neighbors don't get to you first!
If you are giving food to the public you need a permit. Your CAMPMATES and FRIENDS are the only people you can give food to without health department clearance.
FRESH SQUEEZED JUICES
If you are giving away freshly-squeezed fruit drinks to anyone other than your CAMPMATES and FRIENDS, you must get a permit.
ICE
Ice is considered food by the health department. Although there should be no permits needed for bars, your ice source must be approved by state health. The easiest way to comply is to purchase your ice from commercial sources in the surrounding towns as you enter our city, or from us at the event. (Monies from our ice sales go directly back to the town of Gerlach as a gift.)

FIRE SAFETY GUIDELINES
Yes, this is Burning Man. Fire plays a big part in the event. So does fire safety and common sense. But since common sense isn't always common, please read these guidelines carefully.
Fire Safety In Your Camp
Part of the fun of Burning Man is gathering around a fire at night, meeting folks, sharing a story, and enjoying the warmth. As nice as that sounds, there's a lot of responsibility involved, too.
Fire in theme camps is a serious matter and we caution you to take care in the planning of any open flame in theme camps. There must be someone who is responsible and present at all time to monitor any fire in your camp and be prepared to completely extinguish it if wind conditions pick up. At least 5 gallons of water must be kept close for this purpose.
Please remember that any fires found unattended or without water nearby -- or burning in an unsafe manner -- may be extinguished.
Fire and open flame present a unique set of challenges on the playa. Wind is an ever-present aspect of the Black Rock desert, and with little warning, can blow sparks and embers from fire-barrels and across our city great distances until they settle against something (tents, shade structures, camping gear, art works, etc). This is VERY scary in a tent city!
Wind is also a factor with tiki-torches, candles and taller flame effects -- and precautions should be taken to prevent these things from being knocked or blown over. A sufficient perimeter should be kept clear of all flammables. To help you prepare to have open flame or flame effects in your camp, here are some guidelines to help keep everyone in Black Rock City safe:
http://bit.ly/BMFRB
Note: All camps that have Open Fire or Flame Effects are asked to check in at the Artery in center-camp to receive an inspection from a Fire Art Safety Team member.

As you're heading to the playa from all points on the map, we're here to help you make any and all pit stops along the way. We've compiled a collection of resources in the major towns you'll pass through, whichever direction you're coming from -- even from the air.
So if you want to grab that last shower, pick up another 6-pack, find a tent, or just take a moment to kiss sweet civilization goodbye, we've got you handled ...
From the West or South (or flying in), we've got Reno covered. From the Northwest, Cedarville. From the East, we got Lovelock and Fernley. And then, when you get up close to the playa, our favorite small desert towns, Gerlach and Empire.
And on your way out, we've got your tip for car washes, dumping your garbage, disposing of your recycling and ... showers. Mmmmm showers.
And hey, seriously ... please pay all these towns the utmost respect on your way through. They are our year-round neighbors in the high desert, and we appreciate them for always being so welcoming as we invade their Nevada backyard every year. Remember, you represent our community. When patronizing any local businesses, please be respectful and courteous, and Leave No Trace. And keep your pants on.

BIKES - CAN I STILL GET A GOOD BIKE IN RENO?
There are two shops in Reno close to our heart that still have reliable and affordable bikes for rent or purchase.
Kiwanis Bike Project
Highly recommended, we're told that Kiwanis in Reno still has a few used bikes available for Burners to purchase -- reserve online now before they're all gone! All bike purchases support the repairs and donation of bikes for at-risk kids in the Reno area. Moreover, if you return your bike to Kiwanis on your way home from the playa, they love it ñ theyíll refurbish and reuse it! The shop is open daily from 9am-9pm the week before and during Burning Man to pick up your reserved bike.
Kiwanis Bike Project 2605 Comstock Drive, Reno 775-846-7146 kiwanisbikes@att.net www.kiwanisbikes.org
Black Rock Bicycles
Also highly recommended, as they cater primarily to us Burners, Black Rock Bicycles in Reno offers brand new durable cruisers for rent and purchase for both women and men. They also offer a variety of bike-accessories -- locks, bells, lighting, baskets, racks, and fashion. Finally, if you happen to purchase a bike from them and do not want to take it home with you, if you return it to them post-burn, they'll donate it to Black Rock City's Community Bike Program. Visit their website for further information, and to make both rental or purchase arrangements.

Final Notes on Bikes in Reno:
First, the very popular Rats Bikes of Reno, which offers rentals exclusively to long-distance Burners, has been out of bikes all summer. If you're looking for a real good bike rental for Black Rock City in 2011, remember to send Rat an email in May of 2011 -- nv_desert_rat@nvbell.net.

RIDESHARE LOCATIONS IN RENO
Tons of Burners fly into Reno looking for rideshare options to the playa (which is 2.5 hours away). Luckily, many Burners stop in Reno for supplies on their way to the Burn. To best match those looking for rides with those who have a ride to share, there are three Reno rideshare locations...
If you get to any of these locations (during their regular business hours), you should be able to negotiate a ride with little difficulty. These locations are next to a major travel route to Burning Man, and they're about 10 minutes from the Reno Airport. If you are flying into Reno, check in at Air Playa Info (see above) inside the Reno Airport to see about carpooling a taxi with others or taking a shuttle (see below) to one of these locations.
Some things to keep in mind:
The parking lot -- the best spot to inquire about a ride -- is not just for Burners. Other people come to shop there too, so please only inquire for a ride among Burners: We tend to stand out! Offering to chip in for gas may be helpful if you can. Leave No Trace! Everyone in the vehicle must be wearing a seatbelt -- it's the law. And be comfortable with those in the vehicle before hopping on-board.
Right. Now here they are, the three Rideshare Locations:
Save Mart Supermarket 525 Keystone Ave - 775-786-2150 Open 24/7.
Whole Foods Market 6139 South Virginia Street - 775-829-8666 Open Open 8am-9pm.
Trader Joes 5035 South McCarran Blvd - 775-826-1621 Open 8am-10pm (staying open late for us!)
RENO AIRPORT SHUTTLE TO RIDESHARE BASE
Additionally, for those flying into Reno on Monday or Tuesday (August 30-31), there will also be a free shuttle to take you from the airport to one of the rideshare bases. The shuttle will be operating from 10am-2pm, and from 6:30-8:30pm on Monday and Tuesday, transporting people from the airport to the Save Mart rideshare location. Check in at Air Playa Info first if you are interested in taking the shuttle, and they'll schedule you for the next shuttle. Big props to The Amendment 21 and the Reno-Tahoe International Airport for very generously gifting this free service to the Burning Man community!

FROM THE NORTHWEST: CEDARVILLE & ALTURAS
The town of Cedarville, CA is a great stop if you're coming to Black Rock City from the northwest on Route 299. Their chamber of commerce and the people of the town are opening welcome arms to traveling Burners, and working hard to support us. More info and a list of businesses here:

In Alturas:
4-Corners Market in Alturas will stay open for all 24 hours leading up to the opening of Burning Man to help customers make it through the night and not hold anyone up from getting supplies and making it to the Black Rock Desert. Just a reminder that they cannot sell alcohol between 2 am and 6 am. We have plenty of water, food and hoses outside for your convenience.

FROM THE EAST: LOVELOCK
Set on the western edge of "Cowboy Country," Lovelock, the County Seat of Pershing County, is the last major pit stop on I-80 heading west before you veer north to the playa. Great place to stop, get your sleep on, get your supplies-gathering on, while enjoying some history. Get the details here:

GERLACH CAR WASH
Ranger Keeper writes to tell us:
"The annual Gerlach Car Wash will be happening again this year on Snday and Monday of Exodus. All the proceeds go to the Gerlach Schools. This supports our athletic program throughout the year. All of the student athletes (along with parents and teachers) come out with the hopes of washing many a playa-dusty vehicle.
The Car Wash is located on the corner of Main Street in Gerlach. Thanks for supporting the local community!

PURCHASE WATER IN GERLACH
Ranger Keeper also writes:
"The Gerlach GID, our local town governing body, will be selling potable water for filling up RVs and water tanks of any size starting August 27th. We will have ample filling stations in front of the community center, with directional signs located as you enter town on Main Street. Our rates this year will be comparable with Reno at .50/gallon up to 100 gallons, .45/gallon for sales above 100 and less than 200 gallons, and .40/gallon for sales larger than 200 gallons.
This decision has been made in an attempt to keep our water rates reasonable for the citizens of Gerlach. We have a top notch water treatment plant here, but due to the small size of our town, our 150 residents must pay for the maintenance of an entire water system. We want to provide a town resource to the participants of Burning Man, and we think this will save you money in addition to helping our town. Water weighs 8 lbs per gallon, and by buying your water in Gerlach you will avoid paying fuel costs to transport your water from Reno or even farther.
Our hours of operation will be 12 pm – 10 pm with a person available on-call when closed. We are ONLY accepting cash payments as we do not have a credit/debit machine. PLEASE pass this information on to any regional lists you may be on! Our office can be contacted at 775-557-2601 or gerlachgid@yahoo.com with any questions or to arrange fill-ups prior to August 27th.
~Ranger Keeper, Treasurer, Gerlach GID"

EMPIRE STORE
The Empire Store is a smaller store about the size of your average convenience store ... it's not a gigantic grocery store. If you're going to need to stock up on TONS of stuff for your Burn, you'll want to do that shopping in Reno. But the Empire Store is a great resource for the essentials you need, especially the "D'oh! I forgot toothpaste," or "We can't do the project without that spatula!" kind of thing, or to pick up a last 6-pack of beer. Plus, they have ice cream, which will look like EDIBLE SOLID GOLD about the time you're rolling through Empire, believe us.
Thanks to our friends at the Empire Store for their efforts to serve our participants!

Meet up on playa
From the "going to burning man" thread, some are planning a meet up at 3:30pm Wednesday, at Centre Camp. The flag (sigh) will serve to identify your fellow colonists. (People who are actually organising this - please veto if this changes or is not correct.)

2012 Australian Burn to Coincide with Solar Eclipse?
Hey Fellow Burners, This is Proposal To the Organizers of the 2012 Australian Burn.
Since there is a high possibility that the 2012 one will be held in the dessert I thaught It would be best to Coordinate the Time and Location to coincide with the Full Solar Eclipse. That way we can burn the Man during the blackout . That would be quite Interesting and it would be the 1st Solar Eclipse Burningman in history ( that I know of).
What do u think of this idea? |

Going to Burning Man 2010
Hey pixi pirate sorry for the lag in replying. I hope your planning is all going well.
I think I have about 10-20 people interested in coming to a meetup so far. Now it seems that Wednesday is the best as there are some people from Brisbane not arriving until then.
I reckon a flag with an aussie symbol is good cos it will help identify us if we meet up in center camp which will be amazingly busy I'm sure. I am chasing up a lead on a venue space we may be able to use.
So how does Wednesday 3:30pm sound?
It would be far easier for me to keep in contact with you via email so if that's ok with you I posted it on a message to you on this topic a bit earlier. As this is a publicly searchable forum the less email address posting the better. It's a shame this forum doesn't have private messaging.
I am grabbing email addresses from everyone who has expressed an interst in the meet so I can send a final email out once we have everything confirmed and that way people can forward it and we could have a facebook group or event or something.
Not long to go now, I leave on 25 Aug and it looks like I will get early entry and a bike yay!

While Burning Man is certainly a remote and freewheeling place, it's also a functioning metropolis. And just like any other city, numerous law enforcement agencies patrol Black Rock City day and night. Not to toss a wet towel on your fun, but ... yes, all Federal, State and Local laws still exist at Burning Man, and any illegal action witnessed by law enforcement can lead to a citation or your arrest. And that? Would really suck. Your best protection is to obey the law.
In order to give you the best understanding of how law enforcement works at Burning Man, how to interact with a law enforcement officer, and how to protect your Constituional rights, professionals in the extended Burning Man community have generously provided the following information.
It's well worth a thorough read through, and even committing parts to memory ... like how to speak to a law enforcement officer. Believe the Rabbit.

WHAT PUBLIC AGENCIES PATROL THE EVENT?
Officers from the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) patrol throughout Black Rock City and the surrounding Black Rock Desert. BLM Rangers typically wear tan pants and short-sleeved shirts with the Department of the Interior/BLM logo on their sleeves. Investigative BLM agents work undercover and dress like any other Burning Man participant ... even in costume (People who ask for gifts of drugs or ask to trade or buy drugs are acting outside of our 10 Principles and should not be trusted). Please remember, medical marijuana cards from any state are NOT admissible at the Burning Man event. Even if you have a Nevada medical marijuana card, the event is on federal land, and the BLM are federal law enforcement. They will act in accordance with federal law, under which all use and possession of marijuana is illegal. BLM Rangers and Agents are primarily concerned with violations of federal laws.
Another law enforcement group you may see or encounter in Black Rock City is the Pershing County Sheriff's Office, which is also supported by officers from other counties. They usually wear gray/light blue short-sleeved polo shirts. Their primary task is enforcing state and local laws within Black Rock City. This includes the law stating that it is illegal for any person under 21 to consume alcohol. Law enforcement has, in the past and probably again in 2010, conducted operations in search of bars gifting alcoholic beverages to minors. If you are operating such a bar, please be sure to check identification of anyone who may look even close to under 21 to avoid potentially receiving a fine of about $1,100. If you think you may stop at a bar for a drink, it would be best to carry your ID in a secure place, ready to display if requested. And if you get carded, THANK YOUR BARTENDER for keeping Black Rock City a safe and welcome environment for people of all ages.
The Washoe County Sheriff's Office can also be found close at hand, primarily patrolling the nearby town of Gerlach. They wear green uniforms, and are concerned mainly with keeping the traffic moving and ensuring that Burning Man participants respect local citizens' privacy and property. Please be sure that all head and tail lights on your vehicle are working properly, your registration is up-to-date, and your license plate is clearly visible, to avoid an unscheduled stop on your way to the playa.
Some years (and 2010 happens to be one of them), the Nevada Department of Investigations (NDI) patrols undercover in Black Rock City, looking for drug trafficking. Remember, in the State of Nevada even gifting someone a small quantity of a controlled substance can rise to the level of drug trafficking. Please obey the law and avoid being arrested for drug trafficking.
The Nevada State Health Division is also present. Their goal is to protect the health of our citizens and prevent food-borne epidemics, or other health hazards.
**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/***\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**
HOW DO THE BLACK ROCK RANGERS DIFFER FROM LAW ENFORCEMENT? WHAT IS THE LEAL TEAM?
The Black Rock Rangers are Burning Man participants who volunteer time and effort as non-confrontational community mediators. Responding to the continuously evolving nature of the event, Rangers are usually the first to address situations within the community that would otherwise require outside intervention, aiding in the prevention of escalation to that level. By encouraging and facilitating communication, the Rangers promote awareness of potential hazards, from sunstroke to tent fires.
LEAL is an acronym for Law Enforcement Agency Liaison. The LEAL Team is comprised of volunteer Black Rock Rangers who are specifically trained to interact with law enforcement on the playa. They don't directly deal with violations of the law, but they are available to help bridge the gap between our ethos and culture, and the duties and responsibilities of law enforcement officers working on the playa. One or more representatives of this team will be on duty around the clock during the event. They often wear some item of zebra print clothing, along with their Ranger shirts, to help identify them. You can contact a LEAL team member by asking at Ranger Headquarters in Center Camp, or asking any Black Rock Ranger you see to radio for their assistance.
It is important to remember that Black Rock Rangers (including LEAL team members) are not law enforcement personnel. They are members of the Burning Man community, just like you. You can identify them by their khaki-colored attire, featuring the familiar Burning Man logo in brown on their backs and chests. You should feel free to request their assistance at any time.
**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/***\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**\<>/**
PLEASE RESPECT LAW ENFORCEMENT - ESPECIALLY IF YOU IF YOU'RE STOPPED FOR QUESTIONING
It is important to remember that for the Burning Man event to take place, law enforcement are a required and necessary presence. Without them, not only would the BLM not issue a permit because the event on federal lands, but the State of Nevada would not allow such a large assembly without enforcement of state laws. Furthermore, the Burning Man Project is concerned with the safety and protection of its participants, and would not even consider holding such a large-scale event without law enforcement's expertise and assistance.
So how can you as a participant be prepared in the instance that you have an encounter with law enforcement at Burning Man?
First, it is very helpful to understand the law enforcement's concerns, rationales, and potential behaviors on playa and the situations you may encounter (as well as the legal consequences it can engender). This information is found in a concise and readable form in the Law Enforcement section of the Survival Guide. (The Survival Guide has been mailed out to all ticket holders, and is available on Burningman.com at:
http://tinyurl.com/7wrzo
Second, you should remember that the playa is a place to fully express and be yourself. Please choose the behaviors you feel comfortable engaging in on playa before you arrive and become potentially swept away by the events of the moment.
Third, you need to look outside yourself and consider your campmates and traveling companions in your decisions. Do not let their choices and their behavior put you in legal jeopardy, and do not let yours endanger them.
Fourth, familiarize yourself with this year's areas of concern for law enforcement (see the next section).
Finally, you could help the Burning Man Project improve every year by completing a Law Enforcement Feedback Form on playa this year (see below).
Many Burners find it useful to consider law enforcement officers who work the Burning Man event to be participants with differing agendas, differing levels of playa experience and differing levels of Burner acculturation. In the past, many (if not most) law enforcement officers were "playa experienced" and worked the event year after year. Many of them made it a personal choice to come to Burning Man and worked the event. They looked forward to returning to the playa year after year and grew to appreciate and understand the culture of Burning Man.
However, as our event has grown over the years, more and more law enforcement officers have had to be brought in to keep pace with our population growth. For example, we have simply outgrown the limited resources of the Pershing County Sheriff's Office based in Lovelock, and they now have to bring in officers from other Nevada jurisdictions to supplement their own numbers. Similar policies affect BLM's staffing.
As many of you already know, any Burning Man newbie has a pretty steep learning curve upon arriving on the playa, living in Black Rock City and experiencing Burning Man. Lots of folks cannot readily absorb the kaleidoscope of sights, sounds, and human interaction that spring from the Burning Man experience, and it takes them a while to adjust and to adapt. This challenge is heightened by the fact that Black Rock City only exists for a week. This process is made more difficult for Burning Man law enforcement officers because they arrive on playa with a pre-defined set of criteria (the laws they are sworn to enforce); they are not at liberty to discard or even selectively enforce these laws.
Unfortunately, some officers also arrive with pre-conceived ideas about Burning Man, which may or may not align with reality. The result is a predictable (perhaps even inevitable) clash between the values and behaviors that are the tapestry of the Burning Man culture, and many of law enforcement's perceptions about their role as the designated law enforcement force on playa.
As you can tell from observing law enforcement's behavior on playa, and as you can conclude from the changing/evolving content of each year's Survival Guide, the priorities and agenda(s) of law enforcement can often shift from year to year. This is a function of many factors, including changes in law enforcement personnel, changes in Black Rock City citizen behaviors, changes in Burner population and demographics, and changes in pressure and priorities from entities and sources outside of Burning Man and law enforcement.
The Burning Man Project would like to thank all law enforcement agencies at Black Rock for their 15 years of ongoing cooperative effort. The law enforcement presence at Burning Man is for public safety. They provide numerous instances of invaluable services for the good of the community, as public servants. We all have jobs to do, whether patrolling the streets of Black Rock or sliding down a giant wedge of astro-turf, why don't we try to get along? Let's respect one another on the playa and practice a little of that radical inclusion we keep talking about.

SPECIFIC LAWS TO BE AWARE OF IN 2010
It is important to remember that all Federal, State and Local laws still exist at Burning Man. THE USE AND TRAFFICKING OF ILLEGAL SUBSTANCES IS PROHIBITED. Also, MEDICAL MARIJUANA IS NOT LEGAL AT THE BURNING MAN EVENT.
There is usually an emphasis on patrolling Gate Road and at Greeter stations early in the event, as heavy traffic can create unsafe conditions. Even though Gate Road is part of Black Rock City, this is not where mutant vehicles should be operated—unless your mutant vehicle is street legal and your mode of transportation into the event. Stick to the rules of the road while entering Black Rock City — headlights on at night, no passengers on the roof or hanging off the side. Wait until you receive your official sticker from DMV before allowing your vehicle to fully mutate into the bar car, public taxi or art that it is meant to be. Headlights and taillights on art cars will also be monitored while on playa.
Remember that once you arrive at your campsite, driving is prohibited except for DMV licensed mutant vehicles. NO SPEEDING anywhere in Black Rock City, including Gate Road! Please be forewarned that this can be used as a rationale to pull over your vehicle.
NO OPEN ALCOHOLIC CONTAINERS in the driver's area of moving vehicles. An open container does not have to be in the driver's possession. Sitting in the center console and being consumed by the passenger is enough to be a violation. The vehicle does not have to be in motion. The bottom line — no driving with an open container in the driver's compartment at any time, particularly on Gate Road and Greeters stations.
NO UNDERAGE DRINKING. At Burning Man, we want you to let go of your inhibitions and feel fully free to discover and express yourself. We believe everyone is perfectly capable of reaching this level of freedom without the aid of any intoxicating substances (after all, what is more intoxicating than walking along the esplanade at night?), and even more strongly believe that all of the citizens of Black Rock City can experience all that Burning Man has to offer without breaking the law. If you are running a bar or camp that gifts alcoholic beverages, please be sure to check identification of anyone that may look under 21, no matter how "burnery" they seem. If you are planning to drink, as in any city, town, or event, please carry your ID in a safe and secure location. If you are under 21, please feel free to explore and engage in all the magic and wonder that Black Rock City has to offer, as long as you do it according to the law, and alcohol-free.

INTERNATIONAL DRIVERS IN THE US
Quick facts for foreign visitors about driving in the United States 1. An International Driving Permit (IDP) translates information contained on your driver's license into 10 languages so that officials in foreign countries are able to interpret your license. An IDP supplements a valid government-issued license--it does not serve as a replacement for a license. If you are stopped by law enforcement, you will most likely be asked to produce both your IDP and your official driver's license. The United States does NOT issue International Driving Permits to foreign visitors, so you will need to obtain this document before traveling to the U.S. 2. If you are going to reside in the U.S., you can get a U.S. driver's license once you are in the U.S., but it may take several months to obtain a U.S. driver's license. 3. Foreign visitors who become U.S. residents can only obtain a driver's license from the state in which they reside (not from the federal government). Each state has its own driving rules and regulations. Check with your state's motor vehicles department to find out how to apply. 4. Once you receive your U.S. driver's license from a state motor vehicles department, you will be permitted to drive in all other U.S. states. The laws in each state vary from one to another. It is your responsibility to know and obey the laws of that state while driving. 5. The residency requirement for obtaining a U.S. driver's license varies with each state. Consult the motor vehicles department in your state for more information. 6. If you are a foreign student coming to the U.S. to study, contact the university or college you will attend, as most institutions provide students with additional driving information. 7. The U.S. government has issued warnings about Internet vendors of worthless international driver's licenses/permits. It is important to educate yourself about the dangers of these costly and illegal operations. See International Driver's License Warning from Federal Trade Commission.

GIVE US YOUR REAL-TIME FEEDBACK WITH A "LAW ENFORCEMENT FEEDBACK FORM"
If you experience or witness an encounter with law enforcement on the playa this year, whether it's positive or negative, the Burning Man Project would like to hear about it. Each participant will receive a feedback form at the Greeter’s Station. THey are also available at Ranger Headquarters in Center Camp, and at the Ranger Outposts in the 3:00 and 9:00 o'clock plazas. The quicker you can provide us with your feedback, the more effective we can be at following up on situations that occur.
Please try to provide accurate information about the date, time, and location of any incidents, as much detail as you can provide about the officer(s) involved and a clear account of what you saw and heard. We are looking for badge numbers, law enforcement vehicle license plate numbers, an accurate description of the officer's agency affiliation, their uniform description and their vehicle description. The facts of the interaction need to be presented as clearly as possible in order for the report to be of maximum utility. Names and contact information for any additional witnesses are also helpful.
These reports are gathered by the Black Rock Rangers LEAL Team (see above) and are presented and discussed at the daily afternoon meeting with law enforcement. A 2:00 PM deadline ensures inclusion of the report in that day's meeting. The purpose is to inform law enforcement of their observed behaviors and to hopefully shape those behaviors on playa. Important note: Burning Man recognizes that negative feedback can arise as a natural consequence of unfolding events. However, positive Law Enforcement Feedback Form reports are also important. Law enforcement often performs valuable community services at Burning Man, and these acts also need to be recognized so that they can be reinforced and encouraged. If you'd like to make a report in person, ask to speak to a member of the LEAL team.

KNOW YOUR LEGAL RIGHTS
When Can the Police Stop and Search Me?*
The Supreme Court has ruled that law enforcement may briefly stop you to ask for your identity without probable cause of a crime; if this occurs, you should be truthful, as lying to an officer may be a crime. However, an officer may not require you to answer additional questions, detain, or search you without either 1) consent or 2) probable cause.
An officer may ask your consent to search you or your belongings, but in order to be valid consent, a reasonable person must understand that he or she could refuse to cooperate. This means that intimidating tactics, such as blocking a door or surrounding a person with numerous officers, are likely coercive situations where consent is not truly voluntary. Your refusal to give consent does not constitute probable cause for search.
Without consent, the Fourth Amendment states that warrantless searches and arrests can only be performed when there is probable cause that a crime has occurred. An officer must be able to point to specific facts indicating criminal activity that give rise to probable cause; mere suspicion or a “hunch” is not enough. Nor can otherwise legal items alone – a mint tin or a cigar, for example – be used to support probable cause without additional evidence of illegal activity.
* This is not legal advice. This is information digesting the general state of the law. We urge you to consult a lawyer for legal advice about a particular legal question or issue you may have. If you believe you are coerced into giving consent for a search, or that you are searched without probable cause, you may wish to contact the ACLU of Nevada, at
http://www.aclunv.org.
How to Speak to Law Enforcement**
Remember that your best defense against citation or arrest may be politeness. However, nothing requires you to incriminate yourself, and an officer may cite you for revealing any illegal behavior.
Officer, my name is [give your real name]. Am I free to go? If I am not free to go, please explain to me your probable cause for stopping me. I politely refuse to give you any further information. I do not consent to any search of me or my belongings, tent, vehicle or camp.

We'll just go ahead and start this JRS cold with the sobering news that the Man burns in ... 31 days. And gates open? In 26. The Golden Spike (the spot on which the Man is built, and the central point from which the rest of Black Rock City is surveyed) went in the ground on Sunday night!
If you're not knee-deep in your storage closet, huffing playa dust and excavating the bits, bobs and detritus of your last Burn about now, well ... you probably should be. And for all you first-timers out there ... you Birgins (as we've heard them called lately) ... you'd better be on the edge of your proverbial seat, because tell ya what ... in a few weeks, you're in for what could turn out to be the most incredible, mind-blowing experience of your life. The veterans are sagely nodding their heads right now.
And the butterflies are taking wing in your belly. Excellent.
OK, all of y'all ... check this out. We've revamped the Preparation section of the Burning Man website, and that's the ultimate place to go to learn pretty much everything you need to know about preparing (hence the name) for Burning Man. Whether you want to learn how to secure your shade structure or secure your relationship, we've got it covered. If you want to find out about how to prevent playa foot, or find a sno-cone in Reno, we've got that too. And everything in between. Seriously.
http://www.burningman.com/preparation
We are very ... very excited to see you all in the desert, and experience all the amazingness you will manifest in all myriad ways.
26 days, people. Let's make this happen.

PROMOTE YOUR CAMP WITH A PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT ON BMIR!
Promote your camp with a Public Service Announcement on BMIR-FM, Burning Man Information Radio!
BMIR-FM, 94.5 is The Voice of the Man and is one of the best ways to let Black Rock City know about what your camp has to offer be it a fabulous bar, an event, a performance or a really cool art installation.

BLACK ROCK SOLAR HITS A MILLION WATTS...AND AN OPEN POSITION: EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

THEME CAMPS: FEED! ARTISTS: BE FED! PARTICIPATE IN FEED THE ARTISTS!
The inimitable Feed the Artists crew writes to recruit YOU:
"Feed the Artists needs a big push!
:::::THEME CAMPS::::: We've got lots of Artists signed up and need MORE THEME CAMPS to take on the fabulous joy of feeding them! If you are or know anyone who will be on playa pre-burn & who could host an artist, please talk to them, call them, ask them to check this out! They don't have to be a theme camp per see, anyone who's out there early is encouraged to mingle with the artists.
There are artists groups in numbers ranging from ONE to THIRTY, so even if you can only invite 2-5 people to dinner, that's a huge blessing to the artists.
An artist group who just signed up said: "Our meals last year were not only a highlight of our build, but also really contributed a lot to our efforts to putting up the installation. Such a wonderful contribution! : )"
You can check out all of the Artists waiting to be invited to dinner here: http://tinyurl.com/FtAArtistsAvailabilityChart :::::KICKSTARTER::::: As part of the FtA program, our own camp has over 50 volunteers who put in loads of time to create a unique and special environment for the Artists we will be hosting, during 4 amazing dinners, where we hope to feed over 500 artists. But these are not normal dinners on the playa! With gourmet food cooked by volunteer professional chefs, multi-course meals, and incredible entertainment. We are therefore seeking to raise money to fund our on-playa dinners, including costs associated with food and beverage, shwag such as medallions to gift the artists, transportation, refrigeration, infrastructure, waste disposal, decor and entertainment. If you cannot participate in the program itself, it would be so helpful to us to receive any donation towards our efforts. Everything we produce, from the food to the frolicking entertainment, is a deep and heartfelt expression of appreciation for the artists and all the beautiful people who are our guests. We have 10 days to go to reach our goal of $4,250, with 32 Backers, $2,590 pledged so far.. Please visit --> http://kck.st/9cpNcB. Also, upcoming FtA events in the SF Bay Area are listed at the EVENTS tab of the FtA page: http://www.facebook.com/pages/Feed-The-Artists/353762805543

VOLUNTEER TO BE A TEMPLE GUARDIAN
This is certainly a good cause. Liz writes:
"The temple guardians need volounteers to fill some shifts!
Every year since 2002, a group of quiet but helpful Burners known as the Temple Guardians have watched over the Burning Man temple at night, helping to ground the space and assist others in need.
As a Temple Guardian, you volunteer for one or more three-hour shifts. The shifts run overnight from 6pm until 6am, Monday through early Sunday morning. During your shift, your job is to hang back, help ground the Temple space, and provide assistance to those in need.
We use a "small pushes from great distances" approach to help keep the Temple a serene space. We are not rule-makers, and we are not enforcers. Rather, we wait in the wings and watch, acting skillfully on behalf of the Temple and its visitors.
Our group is about 150 people total, and we often create some playa collectibles, like the bandanna that we produce collaboratively every year. But even more valuable than any physical items is the time you will spend at the temple.
Temple Guardians from prior years have reported miraculous occurrences during their shifts. One couple even met during their Guardian shift and later married! It's really an amazing experience. It is truly a special role and a fine way to participate in Burning Man.
If you are interested in being a Temple Guardian, please email Liz McDermott at frigovixen@gmail.com.
Many thanks and much love -- looking forward to seeing you on the playa this year.
Liz Temple Guardian Volunteer Coordinator"

LICK LICK LICK ... CRUNCH ... THE BRCPO NEEDS YOUR HELP

"The Black Rock City Post Office 2.Oh of Funky Town would like to announce the return of our amazing E-mail Playagrams. Friends, family, loved ones & enemies can send E-mail Playagrams from the comfort of their boring yet cleaner than Black Rock City Metropolises, towns or villages by e-mailing the BRCPO2.Oh. It's as simple as following the directions on our website, http://brcpo2oh.weebly.com. Fear not, fans of good ol' fashioned stamp licking, because the BRCPO2.Oh has plenty of stampy, stickery action too. In fact, if you support our project on Kickstarter (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/655892687/support-the-black-rock-city-post-office-20h) with just $15 we'll mail you, or the person of your choice, a Limited Edition Metropolis Post Card right from Black Rock City 2010. Donate $15 many, many times and we’ll send many, many customized dusty Postcards. You can also send any USPS you'd like from Burning Man at the counters of the BRCPO2.Oh in the 9:00 plaza. If you're among the unPostalified masses that are asking "What's a Playagram?" or saying to yourself "I've never considered stamps irresistibly sexy" then you should join in the Funky Town Postie party! E-mail brcpo2oh@gmail.com to join us or ask any Postaliscious questions. Come play in dusty bureaucracy or become among the Postie proud and the deliriously deliverated by volunteering at the BRCPO2.Oh. Trainings will be held at various and accommodating times Monday through Friday. The BRCPO2.Oh needs your generous donations to make E-mail Playagrams, Funky Town Posting and Bureaucratic Art a reality on the playa. If you love the PO but just can’t spare any cash, please check our website for a list of items you might have just laying around to donate. And even after enough cash miraculously rolls in to keep the PO alive, the BRCPO2.Oh is always, always seeking sweaty, dusty bodies of all shapes and sizes and Postal experience to participate. Camp with us, help us build, clean-up, play and, best of all, deliver mail! Thanks! Now I have lots more licking to do... XOXXX, Bethany Epiphany aka Stampy Sadie"

PIGEONOPOLIS: BECAUSE WHAT'S A CITY WITHOUT PIGEONS?
Our old friend Spanky is on a tear. And he needs your help. He writes:
"Looking for a cheap, easy, and fun way to participate this year? Help us make pigeons for Metropolis! Pigeons are an often overlooked but ubiquitous part of metropolitan life, and Black Rock City has none. So, we've created a little instructional video to show you how easy it is to make a few pigeons to bring with you this year. It costs next to nothing, is easy and cheap, and tons of fun. It's also a great project to get the kids involved in. We figure if we get 1,000 people to make only 10 pigeons each, that's 10,000 pigeons! The more the better! CRTT SEEKS MINIATURE MODELS OF YOUR THEME CAMP (JUST READ IT)
This is crazy. As in ... the awesome kind of crazy. Gidget writes:
"C.R.T.T. needs your help with our interactive art project, "METROdome"!
Please contribute miniature models/representations of your theme camp, art installation, regular camp, landmark, etc., which will be suspended from the ceiling of a geodesic dome over its approximate location on a scale BRC map on the floor of the dome, thus creating a miniature floating Black Rock City...
Here are the specs: **Create a lightweight, 3-dimensional, possibly black light reactive, miniature model or representation of your camp/art (meaning it can look like your actual camp/art OR just be a clever representation) **Put a suspension point at the top of the miniature since these will be hung with monofilament line from the ceiling of the dome. **Put your camp/art name and address somewhere on the model. The bottom is probably best since the model will also be viewed from below. **Scale is approximately 50'=1". Since that is pretty darn small we are okay with cheating everything up a little. For small to medium size theme camps try to keep the size between a matchbox and an egg. Large camps or villages (half/full block+ size) can go a little bigger (no larger than cigarette pack size). Art installs can also go a little larger for detail (also cigarette pack size).
We are really hoping that representatives from the Man crew, Temple crew, Center Camp, and other landmarks will participate!
Deliver your miniature to us on the playa! C.R.T.T - Esplanade & 7:00
You can drop off your model, early (from 8/28 on) or during the event, with Gidget at C.R.T.T. or any other capable member of our camp who will give it to me or my co-creators to install. If you wish to keep your model after the event, please pick it up on Sunday before Temple Burn.
It will take the community to build this "community," please spread the word to others! Thank you so much in advance! It is amazing and inspiring to see the art and work you all do on and off the playa, and we are so grateful for any assistance you can give to this project.
Please contact Gidget at crttcamp@gmail.com if you have any questions or wish to confirm participation."

ON-PLAYA SCRABBLE Gidget's got it goin' on in Scrabble style this year. She writes:
"Make yourself an EL wire letter before you get to the playa and join us for Scrabble Night on Wed, Sept 1, starting at 9 pm. Imagine collecting dozens of new and old friends one night on the playa… together we go out and play Scrabble. Each of us has an EL-wire letter hanging in front. We mix and mingle to make words. It’s not like traditional Scrabble… it’s more like fun chaos. We have more than 40 letters (and peeps playing) so far and expect to grow to 50 for our onplaya scrabble "game." We’ll meet at the corner of Esplanade and 6:30 and will be easy to spot with our lit-up letters! If you want your EL letter to match what we’ve done, our letters are 13.5 inches high and 11 inches across and most are aqua-colored standard 2.3 mm wire. To keep it simple, we’ve used 4” zip ties to attach the wire to a plastic grid (in the needlepoint section of Michael’s and Jo-Ann’s and other crafty shops). Of course, feel free to make any kinda letter you like and join us. This is a radically inclusive, equal opportunity event! Email BRCgidget@comcast.net with any questions."

QUIXOTE'S CABARET CLUB AND BAR SEEKS PERFORMERS
An appeal from Quixote's Cabaret Club and Bar:
"Quixote’s Cabaret Club and Bar will return to the playa for the sixth time this year, and we need your help to bring our cabaret stage to life.
A camp of mostly Europeans, but with members from all over the globe, each year we build a cabaret club complete with stage, sound systems and lighting, and we run three nights of splendidly eclectic playa entertainment. Our contribution to the Metropolis is an impregnable castle, and we need court jesters, singing damsels and gallant knights to grace our stage. Indeed if you can sing, dance or strip, fancy yourself as a stand-up comedian, play an instrument, tell jokes, twirl tassles or hoops, yodel, tell poems, spin poi or just do something really weird with a bucket of broken glass and a folding chair that you want the world to see, then please drop us a line at momma.quixote@googlemail.com and we’ll find you place at one of our three cabaret nights."

ADD YOUR OFFERING TO THE TEMPLE - EVEN IF YOU'RE NOT GOING TO THE PLAYA
Madgirl writes:
"The other day in a fit of boredom at work I was daydreaming about the Burn and I found myself thinking about gifting on the playa. I've been struggling with this - I really want to give something back to the rest of the BM community but I don't know how I feel about the idea of giving material things. And then it hit me!
One of the most memorable things about the burn for me is the Temple. I spent hours there last year, reading the things that people had written and looking at the photos they had left. The amount of emotion contained in that small space still blows my mind and the Temple burn was one of the most amazing and spiritual experiences of my life. And then I got to thinking: what about all those people who can't make it to the Burn this year but have letters/photos/messages/whatever that they would like to put at the Temple? So this is for all you Burners out there that can’t make it home this year but might have something you want delivered to the Temple: I want to take it there for you. If you have something you would like me to deliver, contact me at csuskiergirl@yahoo.com. Most likely the easiest way to get things to me will be by mail but of course I’ll be willing to try and work something else out if need be. Dusty hugs and kisses to my burner family, ~Madgirl"

ADD YOUR CAMP'S DJ LINEUP TO THE BIG SOUND CAMP MUSIC CALENDAR
The wonderful Rockstar Librarian Kate writes:
"Yes, I'm ready to create the 5th annual Burning Man Big Sound Camp Music Calendar! But I can't do it without you! I know it's early, but let's just say I couldn't be a real librarian without a *little* OCD on my side...
PLEASE help me help YOU rawk the playa by sending me coordinator contact info, current or future online posts/sites/links for line-ups or any other tidbits that will lead to the best music schedule ever! List will of course be posted once again on many a web site near you!
NEW THIS YEAR! LIVE MUSIC SCHEDULE! Ok, I've heard and listened to the playa voices! And since I am in the biz of making people happy, this year I will attempt to make an *additional* schedule of all the live music camps. SO, if you know of camps who will have a stage and schedule for bands to play live, let me know. Oh, and, cuz you are a smartypants, you decide how to define "live" vs. "thumpy thumpy."
I'll be getting lots o' emails about this, so please, when you message me @ rockstarlibrarian (at) yahoo (dot) com include: 1. Camp Name, Camp Location 2. designate as live music or big sound camp/electronic music (& genre) 3. schedule/links to schedule and/or contact info for said schedulers Much bootie shakin' love to you all, and thank you in advance for your submissions!"

PLAYATECH EXPANDS CAPACITY 10X TO HANDLE RADICAL GROWTH
Sunshine writes:
"Playatech apologizes to Burners everywhere for factory stoppages occurring after JRS #25, when overwhelming demand for our new BlackJack plans exceeded our substantial server bandwidth. A kind Burner rapidly stepped up to re-host our mother ship with 10x more capacity - yay community! (THE AMAZING) DAVID NORMAL BRINGING HIS ART BACK TO BRC AFTER 10 YEARS
May we just say: Wow. David Normal writes:
"I'm looking forward to presenting my work in the Cafe' this year. It will be nice to bring my work back to the Playa after a decade.
It is also (as ever) a challenge. I need more support for the project, and so I've put together this Kickstarter page:
http://normal.bz/401/2010/07/the-illuminations/
It would be great if you could put an announcement about the "Illuminations" in Jackrabbit Speaks, if you don't mind.
My blog page for the project is here:
http://normal.bz/401/2010/07/the-illuminations/
Also, I am looking for some help mounting the show, so if I could announce that I am looking for a volunteer or two to help that would be great."

IRA WEINSCHEL'S PHOTO GALLERY & VIDEO OF THE 2009 TEMPLE
Ira was the official documentarian for the 2009 Temple project (Fire of Fires). He writes:
"I've got a small collection of my favorite Temple shots on my personal site: http://sevenstarphoto.com and there's a larger set of photos on the Community Art Makers blog, http://communityartmakers.com/?tag=temple
A few highlights include: • "Making the Fire of Fires" - A short video assembled from still photos taken during the building of the Temple. It includes shots from our fundraisers in Austin and Houston, our build in Austin during one of the hottest summers on record and the month we spent putting it all together on-playa (all the way through to the Temple burn on Sunday night). • Pre-event photos/blog postings from the playa • A 360-degree Flash panorama shot from dead center of the Temple site on our 2nd day on the playa. A great look at the open playa before the city gets built."

Going to Burning Man 2010
Hey Pixi
I reckon an Aussie meet up would be ace, but maybe Tuesday is better? I think a lot of people will just be arriving and finding their feet on Monday. We can post this on Eplaya too and I guess we need a flag, maybe the aboriginal one with the big sun would be a nice change! Email me if you want on ktt at graffiti dot net
[pixi pirate 21-07-2010 20:33:56]:

Going to Burning Man 2010
Hi Harry
I don't know what's happened but I'm sorry to hear you can't make it. Thanks for thinking of me, I haven't bought a ticket yet or finalised how I will camp.
I wish I had been checking here more regularly! I would love to talk to you about the ticket and Golden Cafe. I'm a bit reserved about putting my email address up here but I think it's the best way for us to get in contact. Hope you check back here too! My email is ktt at graffiti dot net
[Harry 24-07-2010 07:25:01]:
Hi imperatrixi, I turns out that with out being a a untter ruthless backstabbing bastard I can't go to Burningman this year. It leaves me with ticket in and paid up place in a great camp http://www.goldencafe.org/links/ Golden Cafe with this bunch http://www.goldencafe.org/team/ . That with food, water, showersa and a great bar. I noticed on eplaya you were looking for a ticket if you are still look in let me know as if I can't enjoy I would rather someone else did. Harry
